What is the LDG Bulb?

The LDG Bulb represents a new paradigm in lighting that will completely revolutionize the way you think about light, for home, commercial and even industrial applications. LDG is an acronym for Laser Diffraction Grating. This new lighting technology uses laser light requiring less than 1 watt of power to create what we refer to as destination lighting. The light bulb spread is no longer confined to a small area like a campfire, the light reaches distant, hard to reach areas in a way that traditional lighting simply couldn't.

The LDG bulb is designed with a GU7 bayonet mount but what good is that if you want to experience 21st Century destination lighting straight out of the box. For our backers we will provide a standalone lamp which uses this blue technology as a reward. This lamp works on batteries also so you can take it outside.

The lamp comes with a plug in adapter but will also run on two/four AAA batteries.  Using inexpensive alkaline batteries (2 dollar store) you can achieve more than 10 hours of operation. Great use for this Swiss Gear tent below.  One benefit of the unique laser pattern is the elimination of shadows for privacy.  You can control lighting to avoid spill over to other campers. There is actually a 12 year old in the tent holding the blue laser lamp.

We have been using this technology in the field as a green product for our research, development and test. The night light actually has one special quality about it. It can penetrate smoke and help you navigate to exit.

90% of all fires are smoke filled room and rescue That night light just might save your life. Many people do not invest in fire safety infrastructure and so with the LDG and the Firefly night light concept you might just have more safety infrastructure seamlessly integrated into your life.

This Bulb itself will be offered as a limited reward in the form of one of our fully functional prototypes. 

Figure 1. The Diagram in Figure 1. shows the functionality and efficiency of traditional point-source lighting models. The light bulb pools the light's intensity just around its source where it is literally wasted, lighting the ceiling of the room. You can see how this model is very inefficient, using indirect illumination to light the intended part of the space.

Figure 2. The Diagram in Figure 2. shows the functionality and efficiency of the brand-new LDG Bulb. The laser light provides direct illumination to the destination area of the room, wasting no light or energy on the ceiling. The observer would not even be aware of where the light source is located. The destination lighting model of the LDG Bulb has more control, efficiency and passiveness to boot.

Practical Example: Stairwell Lighting

In this model, the photons are pooled at the source (the bulb or candle), with a stronger source being able to create a bigger pool of illumination based on feet. This model could be compared to painting a room by exploding a paint can. Most of the paint remains at the source – the location of the can.

In this model, the photons are thrown out from the source, with one lamp lighting hundreds of yards of space. In contrast to the exploding paint can example, this model would instead be a paintball gun spraying directed photons that splat against the destination for reflective lighting from that surface

Home Lighting

When used in a home theater the LDG Bulb does not effect viewing flat screen televisions. One aspect of a traditional movie theater is to recreate the ambient lighting atmosphere. The LDG provides a somber lighting environment and ability to outline walls and indicate corners without disturbing the movie atmosphere.

Commercial Lighting

The LDG Bulb is most suited to provide lighting where you need. Destination lighting has more control to throw the light where you need it. The LDG can light behind a working area such as a bar or an entrance way such as a washroom hallway.

Industrial Lighting

 When used in a crowded area such as piping, the LDG Bulb helps light behind pipes and eliminates shadows. It provides more details to reveal hidden objects or persons.

Where will the Funding Go?

It is no secret that thinking outside the box takes a lot of time, trial and error and maybe even some lighting-in-a-bottle. Here at Parhelion we have carefully developed the state-of-the-art passively cooled laser technology that lives inside the LDG  Bulb. This Crowd-Funding project is to fund the manufacturing infrastructure (mold and packaging and assembly jigs) for the LDG bulb for general availability in stores. We truly appreciate your support of this project.

Getting this technology manufactured will be the last stretch in bringing this project to the world. The LDG Bulb has gone through various phases of preparation to reach this point.

Risks and challenges

The LDG Bulb is a true marriage of art and technology, it's striking a balance between these two elements that has been a challenge we face everyday. Both sides come with their unique struggles and complications, but our team at Parhelion has learned to take challenges in our stride and use it to our advantage. Whether it be something as technical as manufacturing or something as organic as designing the smooth curves of the LDG's housing, it's truly all part of the process and never comes easy. We have learned a great deal during the development of our laser module and prototyping for the LDG housing, this has prepared us to deal with all obstacles that present themselves moving forward.

We are very confident we can fulfill early bird perks to our backers as we will be working towards this immediately. And for the later awards we have lessons learned from our previous crowd-funding project and have secured suppliers needed. As soon as we reach our goal, we will be ready to get the perks out as promised.
