Toujou Haiti is a group of friends who have come together to form an organization with plans to provide short-term financial assistance as well as self-sustaining solutions and building projects for Haitian orphanages.
Angie Walker and Thea Sywulych, the co-founding members of Toujou, first visited Haiti after the January 2010 earthquake. While in Haiti they were shocked by the devastation and the great need for basic necessities such as clean drinking water and a dry place to sleep. Since returning home to Canada, Angie and Thea have been working towards getting back to Haiti with the help of other organizations, but decided they would be able to make a greater impact if they were to form their own non-profit organization and Toujou Haiti was born.
On October 4, 2012, two members of Toujou, Angie Walker and Jeff Kirkwood will be traveling to Haiti to secure food for an orphanage in the town of Mirebalais which is located 50 km north of the capital city Port-au-Prince. They will also be using this time to evaluate what specific efforts should be planned for future projects.
While in Haiti, Angie and Jeff will be making a documentary-style film titled ‘Le Bon Combat’ chronicling the hardships, living conditions and incredible spirit of the Haitian children. While the earthquake of 2010 shone a spotlight on the Haitian plight for a short time, many forget that Haiti was already the poorest country in the western hemisphere and in great need of assistance before the natural disaster struck. Toujou hopes this film will be the basis for raising awareness as well as obtaining assistance for future projects and fundraising efforts.
“We want people to see up close and personal what is actually happening. The conditions these children live in is something you have to see to believe!“
Angie Walker, Co-Founder, Toujou
The Toujou team is completely grass roots with little experience in film making, but what they lack in experience they make up for in passion. They will have to purchase equipment such as cameras, lights and will have post-production costs. The goal is to raise $10,000.00 to make this film.
