Commander Keen is a fun old side scroller game, which needs no introduction. It was released by id software back in 1991, and used revolutionary for the time fast scrolling tactics which were thought not possible on PCs. id would later release legendary games such as Wolf3d and Doom.
From id's site:
Commander Keen's very first adventure, and the debut of id's
groundbreaking side-scrolling technology. In the game you play the role
of Commander Keen: the alter-ego of an eight year-old genius by the name
of Billy Blaze. When Billy learns that the Earth is in danger, he dons
his brother's football helmet and his homemade interstellar spaceship to
become Commander Keen -- Defender of the Earth!Nowadays, Steam sells a "Complete" Keen Pack, which is not accurate, since it doesn't include 2 episodes because they were published by different parties than id/Apogee and thus they can't be included. Well, this could be different if this campaign is successful.
Keen Dreams' current rights holder is interested in transferring the rights to the episode, and I've been in talks with them to get it done. The asking cost is $1500 to get Keen Dreams re-released digitally and legally across major digital stores. With your help, we can add the Lost Episode to Steam's Keen Pack, and to other stores like GOG.com, across win/mac/linux.
What this campaign wants to achieve:
- Keen Dreams available legally, digitally on Steam, GOG,com, Ubuntu Store, Gamersgate and other stores.
- Steamworks integration on the Steam release, with achievements, leader boards, Big Picture support and more!
- Full source code released under the GPL and available on Github.com
- Keen Dreams on other mobile devices besides Android, like ios, depending on the success of this campaign.
- Eventual full legal release of the game.
- As strech goals, if we reach $6000 or more, we will include even more Softdisk games like Rescue Rover and Slordax !
I will personally contribute towards this goal with my own funds, even if the campaign is not successful. I'll also cover any costs related to submitting the game to any store.
Let's get this game finally released up to the expected modern digital release standards!
