There have been many films about musicians. Mostly “rags to riches and fame” stories of superstars and legends playing huge festivals and making platinum records.
But what about that indie band playing down the street at the corner bar? The twenty somethings who sacrificed their coffee shop paycheck to get 20 minutes on a stage on a Tuesday night?
What’s it really like being in a LOCAL BAND?
It’s fighting with your bassist. It’s lugging a drum kit through the snow. It’s chasing down bookers and talent buyers. It’s trying to convince your coworkers to show up to a cash-only dive on the outskirts of town.
But maybe for those 20 minutes on stage, it’s the best feeling in the world.
This is a movie about the Sisyphean life of a DIY musician and the impossible passion that that requires. Real bands. Real venues. $10 cover and two drink tickets.
Local Band follows the exploits of Lyla Riley and her struggling punk band Minor Illusion as they navigate the pitfalls and perils of Chicago's DIY music scene.
Through lineup changes, borrowed cash, bad gigs and drunken nights, Lyla and her bandmates fight their way through the bizarre trials of growing up and becoming adequate.

Dan is a Chicago-based writer/director pursuing an MFA in Film/TV Directing at DePaul University when he's not working full time at a bourbon bar or moonlighting as an indie rock musician. His films have been exhibited internationally in festivals in London, Montreal, New York, and Kansas. He genuinely enjoys Malört and isn't afraid to tell you that his favorite band is Joy Division.
Jake is a filmmaker and producer based in Chicago and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Yes, those are his real clothes.
While at DePaul University, Jake produced the independent feature film Waiting For The Light To Change, which is expected to premiere summer/fall of 2022. Additionally, he’s written and directed a number of comedic short films. Some of them are funny. Most of them are not.
Emily Schumann is a writer, director, producer, and artist. Her experimental short 'PERCEPTION' showed at DePaul University's Premiere Film Festival, D.E.F (Experimental Showcase), and the Short & Sweet Pandemic Film Fest.
She's currently in post-production on her sweet and sentimental short film 'THE GIVER' and in pre-production on a live-action/animated hybrid short film titled 'ELEPHANT HIDE'. She seeks to build stories that examine what it means to be human, and explore how we're all works in progress.
She's looking forward to bringing 'LOCAL BAND' to life, and couldn't be happier to be part of such a kickass team. Follow her pursuits at @honeybeefilmproductions

Superkick -- 2021 Nominee for Chicago Reader’s "Best Rock Band". A lovable trio of misfits whose songs evoke the power pop melodies of The Cars and the angst of the of early aughts pop punk like Blink 182 and Chicago legends Alkaline Trio.

Pinksqueeze -- The “moms of Chicago DIY”, a queer/femme rock band that brings an incredible live show, a devoted fanbase, and undeniable joy wherever they go.
We are looking for at least $10,000 to make this feature film. Not unlike the DIY scene that propels the bands and artists we admire, we plan to utilize funds with the utmost efficiency, operating with a small but extremely talented crew of DePaul’s most talented film students and most of us making serious sacrifices to bring this passion project to life.

Local Band is a film that seeks to bring the DIY musicians’ experience to the silver screen. Being a working artist is an intensive commitment and a full-time job, and it's a life that countless folks all over the world are familiar with. This is a film that wants to champion and appreciate a lifestyle and passion that has been almost completely missing from pop culture and films.
We're making a DIY film about DIY, and we hope to connect with independent artists, punks, musicians, painters, dancers, comedians, filmmakers, and anyone who's ever had to take their amp on public transit.
This project is truly independent. No studios. No Hollywood. This is the work of individuals who are simply passionate about making movies and telling stories we feel are important. As such, we face a titanic challenge in attempting to make a feature length film that requires feeding our crew, securing numerous locations and recouping travel expenses. We’ll deal with the sleep loss ourselves.
It’s hazardous and probably the hardest thing we’ve ever done. But we believe that we can make something great with just a little bit of your help.
It’s punk rock. We understand that not everyone is financially equipped to make a donation to this campaign but we still appreciate any bit of support you may be able to provide. If you’re rocking with this project, please share it with your friends, family, and fellow musicians. And please feel free to email us with your questions/comments/ideas at localbandthemovie@gmail.com
