Overview
A documentary about the creation of this culturally relevant, site-specific performance work, Mill Town.

Short Summary

Through a loose imagistic narrative referencing past, present and future, Mill Town conjures new possibilities for vacant mill buildings that once provided the Lewiston-Auburn communities their backbone and character.  Making Mill Town will serve as a lasting document of this powerful and ephemeral performance that re-animated the work and life of one mill community and inspired audiences with a highly imaginative, site-specific expression of the iconic spaces.

Linden Tree Productions (LTP) is a Massachusetts based video production company owned and operated by Lindsay LaPointe.  The Mill Town story is told in different locations throughout the mill complex with scenic and media installations, video footage from the city and artifacts from Museum L-A.  Making Mill Town documents:

  • The 4-year process it took to create Mill Town
  • The remarkable and complex creative process between six artistic collaborators
  • The monumental effort and imaginative problem solving of the technical crew
  • The audience’s experience
  • The performers exquisite conjuring of the mill’s past through movement and imagery.

The Mill Town immersive performance installation and the Making Mill Town documentary answer the following questions: How can these old mills be re-animated? What are the possibilities that artists can imagine and illustrate to a mill town community? What does it mean to translate, through artistic expression, a specific place, history and culture for a new generation? How did this project, set in such a vast space, challenge the collaborators to push their artistic limits? This video project answers these questions by documenting the process of how this work brought an old, vacant mill back to life.

What We Need & What You Get

Thanks to our Fiscal Sponsor, The Boston Dance Alliance's giving website we have raised 20% of our funding needed to finish this project.

The funds needed to finish this project will go directly to the 3 editors and 1 sound engineer.  Choose from the perks including a Linden Tree Production T-shirt or an access code to view the video online.

The Impact

The primary goal of this project is to extend the life of an ephemeral performance allowing a far vaster and more diverse audience to experience the work through showings at a variety of locations such as film festivals, dance performance venues, and mills around New England.

A secondary goal is to reach and inspire mill owners, community members, and artists interested in site works.  We intend this project to encourage others to create artistic projects that infuse other mill towns with fresh ideas and uses for abandoned spaces as a way to strengthen their cultural infrastructure and fuel economic growth.
