Intentamos convivir en armonía con los demás, pero en ocasiones ese “otro” puede habitar dentro de nosotros mismos y hacernos sentir que ocupamos un cuerpo que nos resulta ajeno.
LA PELÍCULA
Medea cuenta la historia de María José, una chica de 25 años que juega rugby y vive con sus padres. Lleva una vida intensa, vive su sexualidad sin restricciones, busca constantemente probar los límites de los demás y de sí misma. Un día conoce a Javier, un chico que le encanta y con quien intenta tener una relación. Pero un acontecimiento repentino genera un cambio radical en su comportamiento.
SOBRE ESTA CAMPAÑA
Actualmente nos encontramos en la etapa de pre-producción, la organización del rodaje está muy adelantada. Ya contamos con la mayoría del casting, de las locaciones y con un equipo de lujo.
Al ser esta una película con un abordaje poco convencional, en un país como Costa Rica, en el que los medios para hacer cine de este tipo son mínimos; dependemos en gran medida del apoyo, la disponibilidad del equipo, los actores y de los aportes técnicos, por lo tanto es indispensable que podamos rodar en febrero y marzo del 2016. Hemos recibido apoyo de diferentes fondos y colaboraciones de empresas productoras, pero para poder cumplir con estas fechas y poder filmar aún nos hacen falta $10 000.
Con este dinero cubriremos los gastos de producción tales como alimentación, transporte, y equipo técnico.
SOBRE EL PROYECTO
El contacto con lo físico y la manipulación del cuerpo, es lo más importante en esta película. A nivel de imagen, el cuerpo se va a retratar de forma violenta e impersonal, de manera que no se pueda determinar a quién pertenecen esas formas, jugando con la frontera entre el humano y la bestia, acentuando el sentimiento de vivir habitados por otro.
El trabajo físico con los actores es la materia prima de esta película. Pensamos filmar bajo un planteamiento documental donde la cámara se mueva a favor del actor y no el actor a favor de la cámara, para lo cual hemos desarrollado un laboratorio de experimentación que nos ha permitido explorar nuestro tratamiento estético y nuestra relación con los actores.
El proyecto Medea ha contado con diferentes reconocimientos y apoyos en su desarrollo, fue seleccionada para participar en 3 Puertos Cine 2014, que se lleva a cabo dentro del marco del BAFICI, el Festival de Cine de Valdivia y el Cinemart de Rotterdam, posteriormente Medea fue al Cinergia Lab, 3er Taller de construcción y análisis de proyectos cinematográficos, al Foro de presentación de proyectos de Costa Rica Festival Internacional de Cine y a Cinergia Encuentros 2014. Además a recibido apoyo económico de parte del programa Proartes de Ministerio de Cultura y de Cinergia.
El EQUIPO
El equipo de Medea está constituido por jóvenes cineastas que comparten una visión común sobre la manera de hacer cine: aprovechar al máximo los recursos disponibles, explorar la frontera que existe entre el documental y la ficción, abordar temas que impliquen un desafío real y sobre todas las cosas, tomar riesgos.

Alexandra Latishev estudió en la Nueva Escuela de Cine y Televisión de la Universidad Véritas.
Su cortometraje “Irene” ha participado en diferentes festivales entre ellos Clermont Ferrand, Rencontres de Toulouse, Festival de Cine Latinoamericano de Flandes (mención del jurado), Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de la Habana (mención del jurado), Festival Ícaro (Mejor Cortometraje Centroamericano), y en el Festival Internacional de Cine Paz con la Tierra (Mejor Cortometraje Nacional). Su documental “Los Volátiles“ ganó el premio de Mejor Largometraje documental y premio del público en el Festival Internacional de Cine Paz con la Tierra.
Ella ha trabajado como editora, sonidista y asistente de dirección en varios largometrajes nacionales e internacionales como: “Pan sem Cebolla“ de Alice de Andrade (Brasil-Cuba), “Shadow Girl“ de María Teresa Larrain (Chile-Canadá), “Muñecas Rusas“ de Jurgen Ureña y “Por las Plumas “ de Neto Villalobos.

Paz Fábrega estudió la carrera de Comunicación Colectiva en la UCR además de una maestría en cine en la London Film School, Inglaterra, donde se gradúa con especialidad en Dirección y Dirección de Fotografía. Su primera película,¨Agua fría de mar¨ ganó el Tigre del Festival de Rotterdam en Holanda; uno de los premios más importantes que haya recibido una película centroamericana.
Su más reciente película “Viaje” concursó en la selección oficial del Tribeca Film Festival.
Marcela Esquivel Jiménez (Productora Ejecutiva etapa desarrollo)
Graduada de Comunicación Colectiva de la Universidad de Costa Rica y de Producción en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión, San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba.
Productora de las películas: “Princesas Rojas” (Dir:Laura Astorga), “Deja que yo cuente la historia”(Dir: Milagro Farfán) ,“Los Volátiles” (Dir: Alexandra Latishev), “Agosto” (Dir: Armando Capó), ,“El baile y el salón” (Dir: Ivan Porras). Con la Feria Producciones llevó a cabo la Producción Ejecutiva de Medea en su desarrollo.

Carolina Lett estudió Dirección de Teatro y Dirección de Arte en Buenos Aires, Argentina. En el 2009 obtuvo el reconocimiento a Mejor Dirección de Arte con el cortometraje “La Piel Cansada” de Jurgen Ureña. Ha participado en distintos largometrajes costarricenses como “Entonces Nosotros“ de Hernán Jimenez, “Cielo Rojo 2“ de Miguel Gómez, “Presos“ de Esteban Ramírez, “Viaje“ de Paz Fábrega.

Alvaro es costarricense de padre guatemalteco, de madre tica y de abuelos nicaragüenses. Estudió economía en la Universidad de Costa Rica e hizo estudios de posgrado en ecología política y desarrollo. Luego de vivir en la Península de Osa tomó la decisión de dedicarse al cine. Estudió dos años en el Northwest Film Center en Portland-Oregon, y concluyó su maestría en dirección y guión de la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Su cortometraje “Un lugar Indeseado“ ganó mejor cortometraje en el Costa Rica Festival Internacional de Cine y en el Festival Ícaro, actualmente se encuentra en la preproducción de su Opera Prima “Nosotros las Piedras“

Kimberly Picado se graduó del Conservatorio de Castella y estudio Arte Escénico en la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica. Es miembro fundadora del grupo de teatro Guiñol desde el año 2008. Se ha capacitado en temas como acrobacia, teatro aéreo, teatro gestual, técnica de expresión Vocal, comedia física y dirección de actores. Además cuenta con 5 años de experiencia en realización de casting para producciones audiovisuales nacionales e internacionales.

Valentina Maurel actualmente cursa la maestría en dirección de cine en el Instituto Superior de las Artes (INSAS) en Bélgica y ha dirigido diversos cortometrajes que han sido seleccionados en festivales como el FIFF y el Festival de Films de Fin d’Etudes des Riches Claires.

"MEDEA"
Medea tells the story of Maria José, a 25 year old girl that plays rugby and lives with her parents. She lives intensely, lives her sexuality without restrictions and constantly tries to test other people’s limits and her own. One day, she meets Javier, a boy she really likes and with whom she tries to have a relationship. But a sudden event will generate a radical change in María José’s behavior.
ABOUT THIS CAMPAIGN
We are currently in the process of pre-production, which means that we are still preparing some of the elements prior to the shooting of the film, such as finishing the casting and scouting for locations, but we are almost ready to shoot. Given the fact that this is a low budget film, we depend a great deal on the support and the availability of the crew, the actors and the technical equipment, it is essential that we can shoot this movie February and March 2016. We have received support from different funds and collaboration with production companies, but in order to comply with this deadline and be able to shoot we still need $10 000.
With this money we will we able to cover production expenses such as food, transportation, and technical equipment.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
We try to live in harmony with others, but in occasions that “other” can live inside of us and make us feel like we are occupying a body that isn’t ours.
The connection with what’s physical, the manipulation of the body is essential to this movie. Regarding the visual approach, the body will be handled in a violent and impersonal way, in order that we can’t determine who the shapes and forms belong to, playing with the border between the human and the beast, accentuating the feeling that we live inhabited by the “other”.
That’s the reason why the physical work with the actors is the raw material of this movie. We want to shoot with a documentary approach where the relationship with the actors is as organic as possible, in which the camera moves in favor of the actor and not the actor in favor of the camera, and for which we have developed an acting laboratory that has allowed us to explore our esthetic approach and our relationship with the actors.
The project “Medea” has received different recognitions and support during its development, it was selected to participate in 3 Puertos Cine 2014, that takes place within the BAFICI, the Festival de Cine de Valdivia and the Cinemart of Rotterdam. Medea was also selected for the Cinergia Lab, third workshop of construction and analysis of cinematographic projects, for the Presentation Forum of film projects within the Costa Rican International Film Festival and for Cinergia Encuentros 2014. It has received the financial support from the Proartes program of the costarican Ministry of Culture and Cinergia.
THE TEAM
The team of Medea is formed by young filmmakers that share a same vision about filmmaking: To make the most out of the available resources, to explore the limits between documentary and fiction, to approach subjects that imply a real challenge, and above all, to take risks.

Alexandra Latishev studied at the New School of Cinema and Television at the Veritas University.

Paz Fábrega (Executive Producer)![]()
Paz Fábrega studied Communications at the University of Costa Rica, and obtained later a master at the London Film School, where she graduated with a major in Direction and Direction of Photography. Her first movie¨Agua fría de mar¨ won the Tiger award of the Festival of Rotterdam Film Festival; one of the most important recognitions a central American film has ever received.
Her latest film “Viaje” was in the official competition of the Tribeca Film Festival this year.

Carolina Lett studied Theatre Direction and Art Direction in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2009 she obtained the award for best Direction of Art for the short movie “La Piel Cansada”, by Jurgen Ureña. She has participated in different costarican features as “Entonces Nosotros“ by Hernán Jimenez, “Cielo Rojo 2“ by Miguel Gómez, “Presos“ from Esteban Ramírez, “Viaje“ by Paz Fábrega.
Álvaro Torres (Cinematographer)
Álvaro is Costarican with a Guatemalan father, a Costarican mother, and Nicaraguan grandparents. He studied economics at the University of Costa Rica followed by graduate studies in political ecology and development. After living in the Osa Peninsula, he decided to learn the craft of filmmaking. He studied at the Northwest Center in Portland-Oregon for two years, and recently finished the Master's program in Filmmaking at the University of Texas at Austin. His short film “Un Lugar Indeseado“ won Best Short Film award at the Costa Rica International Film Festival. Nowdays he's producing his first feature film “Nosotros las Piedras“.

Kimberly Picado graduated from the Castella Conservatory and estudied Scenic Art at the National University. She's a member and founder of the Teatrical Guiñol Group since 2008. She received training in subjects such as acrobacy, aereal theater, gestual theater, technical vocal expression, physical comedy and actor's direction. She has 5 years of experience in casting for audiovisual production.

We live in a country that hasn’t got enough financial funds to support our film industry, and this sort of campaign allows us to make more and better movies. In Costa Rica people know very little about these ways of funding, but we are a new generation of filmmakers that is looking to involve people more in the process of filmmaking.
