Just tap Mikme, start recording on its built-in audio recorder, then send your music—via Bluetooth—to the Mikme mobile app for editing, tweaking, adjusting and sharing.

And it looks great, too!

What the Press Says

Mikme is a wireless microphone and audio recorder like no other
by Devindra Hardawar - Engadget

"...it could be incredibly useful to musicians who want to record their work on the go, or for journalists and podcasters who need something more capable than their iPhone's microphone."

Is Mikme the GoPro of Microphones?
by Joel Johnson - Fast Company

"The secret to great video is audio. In an age where your cameraphone shoots video that isn't just good enough, but actually pretty great, the tinny, flat sound that accompanies most videos remains the starkest difference between amateur and pro. Where's the GoPro or iPhone for audio?

Well, it might be Mikme."

"...when Mikme played back a variety of recordings, ranging from interviews to music, I was impressed."

"Audio can be baffling, challenging and expensive. If you aren’t sure what you’re doing, you end up with sound that is akin to hearing a conversation through a tin can in a Miami club. “Good” audio equipment is expensive and doesn’t guarantee results. Well, that was the case until Mikme. I spent some time with the attractive little box and its creator, Philipp Sonnleitner, and have seen (or rather, heard) what it is capable of… and I was impressed."

Meet Mikme's Creator, Phillip

Philipp Sonnleitner founded Mikme so that content creators such as artists, video makers and podcasters could focus on making music, videos and recording audio wherever they are.

As a creative and musician, Philipp was frustrated by how long it took him to record a new idea or song. Setting up microphones in front of his acoustic piano, connecting cables, setting up sound cards and recording software simply took too long.

Before leaving his job to make Mikme, Philipp was a software engineer and product manager at AKG—the legendary Austrian microphone and headphone manufacturer— for 8 years.

Meet the Team

Together, with Josef Scheider (Former head of mechanical design at AKG for 20+ years), Alex Pohl (Lead designer), Richard Pribyl (former lead acoustic engineer at AKG for 35+ years) and Manuel Gattinger (Industrial designer) we brought this project to life.

Mikme consists of a passionate team of 15 designers, musicians and engineers who  brought more than 150 successful, world-class audio products to market. Such as studio  microphones and studio/consumer headphones, wireless microphones and Bluetooth speakers for companies such as AKG, JBL, Samsung, Audi, BMW and others.

In sum we hold 80+ patents and won 40+ design awards.

Design and engineering takes place in Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Serbia and the USA. Mikme will be manufactured in Germany.

Please contact us if you have feedback, ideas or anything else that could make Mikme even better: hello@mikme.com

Thank you!

Why We Need Your Help

We have working prototypes which are recording crystal clear audio and are transmitting audio securely and reliable through our Mikme Lost & Found wireless link.

The free Mikme App is available on the Apple App store already. It works standalone using the iPhone's internal microphone and other external microphones. So you can try it already and see what we are building.

Now to get manufacturing done we need your help. We need at least $25.000 to get a minimum order quantity to order the first pieces of Mikme from our contract manufacturer from Munich, Germany.

Support Mikme at Indiegogo and soon you'll be able to record audio with one button in studio-quality.

Risks and Challenges

Well, if there weren’t a risk we wouldn't be on Indiegogo.

We are a team of very experienced individuals who have gone through the product development process more than once (our team designed, developed and manufactured more than 150 products). Unforeseen things sometimes happen, but we are convinced that we can start manufacturing the first series in August/September 2016.

The biggest risk eliminator is the minimum-order-quantity. This is why we need funding of more than $25.000. Every additional cent makes it safer. We have already a contract manufacturer in Munich, Germany. Again, quantity is very important.

Once produced, we will stamp "Made in Germany" on each box, which reinforces constant production quality.

FAQ

  • [App] - Will the app be available for Android too?
Yes. We will offer a Mikme recording app for Android too. The Android version will be available at public launch of Mikme. The iOS Mikme App is already available on the Apple App store.
Get the Mikme Audio Recording App for iOS now!

  • [App] - Will the app work on an iPad just as well?
Yes. The iOS app will also work on an iPad.
Get the Mikme Audio Recording App for iOS now!

  • [App] - Will there be an export function to export the separate tracks as audio files (WAV, AIFF, etc.) for further editing in third party program on a Mac or a pc?
Yes. You are already able to export all tracks of a song as individual files, and an entire mixdown of the song. These tracks can then be imported on a Mac or PC. The files can either be exported via Mail, Dropbox or iTunes file sharing.

You can also share the entire open song with all settings and separate tracks to other Mikme App users for further editing or recordings. This makes collaboration extremely fast and easy.
Get the Mikme Audio Recording App for iOS now!

  • [Sound] - Is it possible to adjust the gain level of the microphone? I often record in very loud environments!
The Mikme Microphone has an adjustable gain of 0-30dB. It can handle even the loudest signals. For setting up the gain easily we have implemented Sound Check. Simply tap and hold the capture button for a second, then perform for seven seconds. Your Mikme Microphone will automatically adjust the gain on its own. Never dial in your gain on a rotary knob any longer.

  • [Sound] - Can Mikme handle high SPL signals?
Mikme has a 30db built in adjustable gain and can handle up to 145db SPL (Sound pressure level). So even loud guitar amps and bass drums should be no problem.

  • [Skype] - Does the Mikme microphone work for Skype calls?
Yes. If you make Skype calls on your Computer (Windows or MacOS) or Mobile device (iOS or Android) you connect wired via USB to your device and you can call in high audio quality.

  • [GoPro] - Does Mikme work with my GoPro Camera?
Yes. Mikme will work with your GoPro camera. You can connect the headphone out mini jack of the Mikme microphone with a minijack cable with the microphone input of the GoPro. The Mikme microphone will send the high quality sound of it's capsule directly to the headphone output with no latency. You can adjust the volume out of the headphone out directly on the Mikme microphone so you can find the right volume to match the GoPro input.
Further more you can record locally at the Mikme microphone if you move around with the GoPro and want the microphone to stay let's say at a table or somewhere else. This gives you additional freedom.

    • [Bluetooth] - What is the Bluetooth wireless range, maximum distance?
That mainly depends of the location you are using Mikme. Normally between 10-15 meters.  Inside buildings and depending on the room you are using Mikme in it can be longer.

    • [Bluetooth] - What is the latency in live recordings?
Normally the latency is around 30-100ms. That depends on how much Mikme microphone are connected. The audio monitoring is done right at the Mikme with headphones so you have no latency in monitoring yourself through Mikme Microphone. Also playback tracks from the Mikme App can be monitored on the Mikme microphone itself.
  • [Bluetooth] - Is Bluetooth used to sync audio recording to iOS devices in real time or is it only used to sync multiple recorders to work together?
Both assumptions are right. We are using bluetooth to first make sure the audio is sent in realtime to the phone. We have our own patented Lost & Found protocol on top of bluetooth so you can be sure not a single piece of audio is lost. This works for multiple Mikmes too. Furthermore we sync and remote control via bluetooth and other mechanisms. So that all audio streams are perfectly in sync at your app.

  • [Bluetooth] - So the audio is compressed, because 96k/24bits is 2304kbps which is beyond the capability of Bluetooth? Is it a lossless compression?
96kHz can only be recorded locally. If you want to record wirelessly the sampling rate is switched to 44.1 kHz. The Mikme microphone is recording with with to 44.1 kHz/24bit and saves the raw wav files at its internal 16GB memory. At the same time we are encoding that file into a mp4 file with an aac encoder. This decreases the files size by roughly 10 times and that file is than streamed via bluetooth to the app. The app then process the mp4 files.
We made quite a lot hearing tests with audio engineers, musicians and hifi guys to find out if that compression is good enough. We found out that the aac works really well and that it’s nearly impossible to distinguish between the original and compressed files. Most of the test persons, and these were audio pros, had no chance to tell the difference.
If you still want to have the raw files you can transfer them from the mic via USB onto your computer for further processing.

  • [Other] - What's the housing made of?
The top and the bottom parts are plastic (need to be plastic so we get the wireless bluetooth connection in and out). It's high quality plastic.
The main middle part of the frame is out of metal.
