Nationalism in Modern America

I am an American ex-pat who has grown up in Scotland, never really living or experiencing the country from which I carry a passport. This allows me to take an objective view of a set of ideals I've always been fascinated with: patriotism and nationalism, and where they might lead us. With this project, I want to travel to Cleveland, Ohio, for the Republican National Convention and the Fourth of July parades, in order to observe and document my surroundings through film and photography. My eventual goal is to have a series of images and video, combined with music and/or sound design to capture the American brand of nationalism at its most prevalent time.

Funding: What I Need, and What You Would Get

I am asking for £2000 ($2800) in order to pay for my airfare, transportation, living expenses for 3 weeks, and photographic equipment including film and lenses.

Why Should I Donate?

The drama of this American Presidential race provides a perfect time to study and document a heightened level of nationalistic fervour rarely seen in American cultural history. This climate, particularly the rise of figures like Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, has been heavily covered in the media, but rarely examined through the artistic lens. These donations will allow me to do just that, capturing the feelings and atmosphere of a tangible time and place. You will be helping an aspiring artist (that’s me!) conceptualise, capture, and hopefully display his first major project, bringing a new, young voice into the international art scene.
