Hi Everyone :)
I've been doing Web programming for about 15 years now and I'm gearing up to launch my own search engine. I've spent a long time working for other people developing all kinds of advertising technology and other stuff that doesn't really interest me and I want to get down to somthing that actually gives something to the end-users. Once started, a decent search engine will generate pretty good ad revenue without any need to spam people or obfuscate the results.
One cool thing about the technology I am developing is that it doesn't try to download the entire Internet. The spider that gathers links and data can be instructed to research only certain topics. I figured it would be nice to put it up here and let the people who donate decide what some of those topics will be.
What I'll Need:
- A few fast machines to run it on. Renting hosting for a project like this would be incredibly expensive at the beginning stage.
- Coffee. You can't do something like this without coffee.
- Time. Getting even half of what I'm trying for here should give me enough time off work to get this whole thing up. I'd just do it myself but I'm just getting by as it is and I can't afford to put the time in right now.
- Advertising. Once it's done I'll need to push a few ads here and there to get the word out. Anything left from this project after development will be invested in advertising.
What You Get:
First off, a new search engine that you can use for free any time you like.
If you donate and pick a topic, the search engine will know a LOT about that topic after a few months.
The warm fuzzy feeling of taking a creative person and good programmer out of the ad industry and into something useful ;)
