Join Our Filmmaking Adventure!

Once Upon a Time in Suffolk is an anthology feature film of nine short stories, written by East Anglian writers, inspired by classic fairytales and the rich folklore of Suffolk.

It's being produced by FILM Suffolk — that's us! — a grassroots organisation dedicated to promoting filmmaking and moving-image culture in this part of the world. Our track-record includes two previous crowdfunded anthology feature films. With Love from Suffolk (2016) and The Haunted Hotel (2021) have won awards, enjoyed cinema screenings in the region and reached audiences of millions around the world on streaming services.

Once Upon a Time in Suffolk is our most ambitious venture yet: a veritable whirlwind of funny, fantastic, life-affirming tales featuring an amazing array of characters. There's a living scarecrow, talking donkey, fish-man, wolf-woman, magic bees, mischievous fairies, 18th century smugglers and even a stunt rabbit! Threaded through each segment is a positive message about sustainability, and we are partnering with local and national charities to shout out about these worthy causes as we make the film.

Our work makes a difference, providing an international platform for the region's talent and a vital first step for young people seeking careers in the creative industries. By bringing together high-level film professionals with those at the start of their journey, FILM Suffolk is building a local network that can support and nourish not just filmmaking, but creativity in all its forms. 

Once Upon a Time in Suffolk will build on our previous successes, using our proven production model to conjure up an anthology feature film that is delightful, disarming and thought-provoking, delivering a positive message about sustainability whilst being thoroughly entertaining. With your support, we can bring our movie to big and small screens around the world — it's a fairytale ending!

What We Need & What You Get

Everyone working on this project is a volunteer — including the producers — all contributing their time and talent without pay to bring these local stories to life.

Alongside our army of volunteers and the incredible generosity of regional service providers, there are unavoidable costs we must meet in order to achieve our goals. Principal among these:

Art Department — the wild imagination of our writers means a whole host a lot of props, costumes and special effects to create

Catering — an army marches on its stomach, and our many volunteers are no exeception

Sustainability — the target is 0% carbon, 100% sustainable, we don't want to cut corners

Insurance — we need to make sure all our crews and the equipment they use are covered

Locations — it will require some outlay to access the amazing locations Suffolk has to offer

Transportation — we're keeping it local but we still need to get our teams from A to B

We need £15,000 to meet these targets, which is why we’re asking for your support. Join us on this ambitious journey - we’ll share updates and exclusive behind-the-scenes content for our backers, and there are some great perks and opportunities to be had too!
