Overview
‘Open Pit’ is a documentary film about women who have lived over 30 years in a mining camp located in southern Peru. The camp seems to promise an ideal lifestyle, but the sense of belonging is easily lost due to its stillness and isolation. Living here is like living in a golden cage.

Hello!

* Para español, bajar hasta el final *

My name is Gabriela Concha. I’m a Peruvian photographer and filmmaker currently living for a short period in New York while I work on the editing of a documentary I made of a mining camp in southern Peru.

‘Open Pit’, in Spanish ‘Tajo Abierto’, refers to an open wound on the surface of a terrain.*

The title is used as project guide as I approach the film working with tension cracks as wounds in the camp's landscape.

The main characters of this story are the eldest women, including my mother, who have lived there for over thirty years. Most of them don’t work for the company and cannot professionally develop freely since it’s a secluded little place, thus having to assume the role of housewives.

The movie is also a personal story since I was born and lived in the camp for seventeen years. After a long time, I return to confirm that time has blocked my recognition of this place, unleashing a desire of claim and reconciliation.

From this event, I seek to understand the notion of time and distance that is experienced in a place that has unique characteristics because of its size and isolation. I unfold a territory with big gardens that have a beautiful view of the mountains, while I speak to this group of women and try to get closer to my mother.

* The ambiguity of the term is mentioned in the film 'Del Verbo Amar' by Mary Jimenez, and inspired the project's title.

Questions that have arisen during the making of the Documentary

During my visits to the camp I was able to see more closely the maternal guilt. Women are constantly wondering if they could’ve done more for their children. I came to the conclusion that symbolic violence doesn’t only affect our freedom of expression, but also affects the guilt we feel. Many times we come to think that it is our duty to put our interests last when it comes to family.

There is then a tendency in women to be altruistic, and even more if they are mothers. Putting all these circumstances together, in a company that operates under a patriarchal model with workers and encourages symbolic violence towards women, I wonder what happens to the sacrifice of all mothers once their children leave the camp. Doesn’t that sacrifice lose a little sense?

Parents can be very emotionally dependent on their children, specially when they're trapped under an oppressive environment. And the saddest thing is that this dependence is sometimes not reciprocal. We as daughters and sons sometimes forget.

My way of reconciling with my own forgetfulness is in many ways what this project is all about, as well as facing the obstacles affecting the women’s equality, while trying to be a better daughter.

It’s a story about love, motherhood, emotional distance, and connection.

Impact

This project is important for my generation, for my mother's generation, and for all families that suffer the consequences of symbolic violence and do not know it. It raises the question if we want to continue living under a social mandate of masculinity. I trust that the documentary will encourage society to open a much-needed dialogue about this issue , which has been experienced for a long time but never properly addressed.

'Open Pit' also wants to reach an audience that is dedicated to documentary filmmaking, or that works on similar topics with their families, to question the ethics of the artist and the enormous responsibility that one must carry with his or her personal projects. What does it mean, for example, "not to betray one's art?" If not betraying my art is going to hurt someone involved in the project, is it valuable in any way?

What we Need

The funds for our $5000 goal will help complete the filming, the project's editing, post-production and professional audio editing. If your contributions go over the goal, we already have clear plans of how that money would be spent:

  • A stretch goal of $6000 will allow us to submit the documentary to international film festivals that require an entry fee that ranges between $30 and $100.
  • A stretch goal of $7000 will allow us to increase the post production quality of the film, which includes sound edition and color correction. Plus, submission to international film festivals!

¡Hola!

Me llamo Gabriela Concha.
