"40 acres and a mule" is a phrase that refers to a promise made to formerly enslaved African Americans after the American Civil War. The promise was part of Special Field Orders, No. 15, which was issued on January 16, 1865. The Order provided land and resources to help freed people achieve economic independence.

But the Order was soon rescinded, the land stolen and the people left without the critical resources needed to start the process of building generational wealth.
