An Advance in Education

We are a studio of 18 senior architecture students in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati. We are honored to have the opportunity to present our research-based capstone project, Out of Failure, at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City from May 17-20. Inspired by the rise of human displacement as the result of natural and geo-political disasters, Out of Failure is an in-depth look at how rapid prototyping technology, digital design, and contemporary materials can be combined to provide the most effective, culturally sensitive, economical, and ergonomically designed disaster relief shelter possible. It is our hope that with the support of strategic partnerships forged at ICFF, we will be able to implement these shelters for disaster relief on a global scale. Contributions towards our campaign will go directly to further research, design, and development, culminating in a full-scale prototype that will give the attendees of ICFF an immersive and tactile understanding of our research.

It is our hope that our final proposal and full-scale prototype will foster continued discourse and innovation.

Global Investigations

Over the past few months, we have researched disaster scenarios across the world to gain a better understanding of the precedents, culture, and need for better relief shelters.  We’ve looked into natural disasters in Haiti, geo-political disasters unfolding in the Syrian civil war, and urban disasters in New Orleans. Our research has led us to better understand the complex systems of both physical and psychological adversity that come with human displacement.

Our project maximizes limited space through multifunctional surfaces, allows for easier transport as a flat pack system, and integrates cultural elements into its design to provide a comfortable environment for physical, mental, and emotional recovery.

Join Us

We understand how fortunate we are to be a part of a capstone studio that allows us to combine our design education with the prospect of providing humanitarian relief. We are especially honored to have the opportunity to present our research for a second year at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair at the Javits Center in New York City. As a staple of New York’s Design Week, the ICFF convention will place our research in front of over 29,500 internationally renowned designers, manufacturers, distributors, and public figures, as well as the general public, providing a forum to both share and vet the proposals developed during our capstone studio.

Your generous support will allow us to build a full-scale prototype of our disaster relief shelter as well as travel to ICFF this May to publicly advance the discussion on disaster relief housing.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you would like to donate materials or supplies to be used in the construction of our full-scale prototype, please contact us at:

OutofFailure2014@gmail.com

While we are only asking for $5,000.00, our presentation and travel expenses total over $13,000.00, so any additional donations would be greatly appreciated.
