People Who Don't Know Me is a short coming-of-age/dramedy set in the 90s alternative rock scene.
Sue
Hawkins, an awkward teenager with a talent for songwriting, dreams
of being in a rock band but is thwarted by her anxiety. She leads an active fantasy life, and sends regular fan mail to
her idol: Dean Cameron, the attractive, erratic front man of her
favorite band. Sue’s ideals are tested when Dean unexpectedly shows up at her doorstep in NYC one night, clutching a stack of her letters and demanding to talk. Torn between desire and fear, Sue steps outside
the confines of her anxiety, resulting in unanticipated repercussions.
Message from the Writer/Director
My name is Sarah Richardson, aka SR Palm. I'm a filmmaker, multimedia artist and musician based in NYC. People Who Don't Know Me is my thesis film for the MPS Live Action Short Film program at the School of Visual Arts.
This
film draws from personal experience. After discovering punk rock as a
teenager in the mid-90s, I felt like music was the key to escaping the
alienation I experienced growing up in small-town New England.
I
was painfully shy, but fantasized about being in a band (I
eventually went on to play in a Toronto post-punk band called The Creeping Nobodies, and currently play in a band called Blues). I watched every
rock-related movie I could find, enjoying anything that even remotely mirrored
the life I wished I could be living. Unfortunately, many of these movies only portrayed male musicians, and often lacked strong, complex female characters. Ultimately, I hope to empower creative young women by telling a story
that features a talented female protagonist, whose agency effects positive change in her life. I want to make the film I wish I’d
seen as a teenager, and still want to see today.
With your support, we can make it happen!

What We Need
Our total budget for this film is close to $11,000. I have already raised $1,000 in funds, thanks to a generous scholarship I won from the MPS Live Action Short Film department, which I will put towards this project. I am also hoping to raise funds from additional sources/activities.
We're trying to raise $8,500 of the budget on Indiegogo, to put towards pre-production and shooting costs.
These funds will go towards:
- Crew & Talent Fees/Expenses
- Location Fees
- Equipment Rental & Insurance
- Meals/Craft Service Supplies
- Parking, tolls & gas/Trucking
- Props/Wardrobe/Set Decoration
- Hard drives
- Other costs related to pre-production & shooting
If we raise more than this amount, we can make the project even better, and will have money to put towards post-production, promotion and distribution!
