A quick note about or goal:
$7500 was my minimum goal to ensure I didn't go too far into debt on this project. I knew up front the
total cost will be closer to $15,000.
As of September 9th, we've logged many hundreds of volunteer hours and I've spent over $13,700 on materials.
Anyone can still contribute to the campaign and claim any of our awesome perks until we break even and stop accepting donations. We'd also love to upgrade the paint beyond primer, add some LEDs, maybe some speakers, etc. So please keep the love flowing and keep spreading the word about this awesome project!

Inspired by Strandbeests, the original dream machines of artist Theo Jansen, the PlayaBeest will be a 10ft tall, steel, pedal-powered walking machine weighing over 1500lbs that that will be unleashed on Black Rock City at Burning Man 2016!

The key science behind these incredible creatures is the geometry of the leg mechanism. Each leg has 11 segments defined by 13 dimensions that allow the sculptures to glide smoothly across the earth. Jansen aptly refers to these "13 holy numbers" as the Strandbeests' genetic code.

Jansen released this "genetic code" out into the wild with the hopes that others would continue the evolution of the Strandbeest by making their own creatures in their own vision.
We've decided to take on this challenge by designing, building, and bringing some kinetic, interactive art to Burning Man 2016!
Additionally, we love making kick-ass things we can ride on, especially big, iconic and beautiful things that can be shared amongst our community to enjoy. Just checkout Nate’s last project where he set a world record flight at Red Bull Flugtag in 2013!

Bringing the PlayaBeest to life requires over 2000lbs of steel, and hundreds of bearings, bolts and nuts. At the bare minimum, we need to raise $13,700 to cover the cost of materials. If we exceed our goal we can help subsidize our transportation costs and potentially add some mind-bending lights and boss tunes to allow the PlayaBeest to roam around at night.
