Background
Mel, 34, is a single mother of seven beautiful kids; and an elder sister and mentor to all of us dancers from Pluspoint.
We were officially set up in June 2012 when Mel decided to channel her energy and attention to dance to keep her away from other temptations and hedonism, a previous lifestyle that had landed her two terms in jail.
Through these years, Mel has served as a mentor and a role model to all of us who are part of the group. Many of us go to Mel when we have problems, and she always helps us out.
Other than performing at weddings and birthday parties, we have also taken part in gigs at community centres and competitions. In 2012, we clinched fourth place in the prestigious Dhool V competition organised by Vasantham. Earlier this year, we won runner up in the "Dance for a Difference" competition organised by Jurong GRC.
Where your money goes
Our Pluspoint family has officially put this campaign to raise USD 6000 for ourselves to :
- purchase a good set of speakers for dance practices and,
- to contribute to our competition fees and costumes.
- Any extra funds will be used for groceries, to offset the burden on Mel, who has been providing meals for us from her own pocket.
Your contribution and kind words will be of great support to us. It will serve as a great motivation for us to keep dancing, and this is definitely one way we can better spend our time.
In these two years that Pluspoint has been around, Mel has supported at least 40 of us. We are very grateful, but now, we hope that you can help us grow us a dance group.
We are currently working very hard, and looking forward to fighting for top place in the prestigious Dhool competition organised by Vasantham next year, and by contributing to us, you will be helping to keep this dream alive.
Risks & Challenges
Amongst us we have ex-offenders, juveniles with records, unmotivated and at risk youths, we may seem a little difficult to trust because of our history and background, but we want you to know that that very little bit of belief and love from you guys will go a long way for us.
We have also nominated a fund manager, Bernice Wong, who will be assisting us with the money we collect from this campaign. We want to be as honest and transparent as we can, so feel free to check in with us if you'd like to have a look at our accounts.
Other Ways You Can Help
Other than contributing to this campaign, you could also help us by engaging us in dance gigs at your events, or even by just sharing this campaign with your friends and family.
