PORN TO BE FREE is a documentary by Carmine Amoroso about the generation who fought against puritanism and censorship to defend freedom of speech and sexual freedom. From Italy, Denmark and France through to California, the film follows a group of rebels who started a battle against censorship through pornography. Together they shook the church, the politics and the institutions.

Through uncensored exclusive footage and archive material, the film explores the story and the fights of a group of pioneers: from film director and porn pioneer, Lasse Braun, to Riccardo Schicchi, master of transgression such as the election of porn star Cicciolina in the Italian Parliament. The documentary features numerous other protagonists such as feminist porn director Giuliana Gamba, author Lidia Ravera and a short animation by Charlie Hebdo's veteran Siné. Through their utopia and shocking dreams, they made the world a freer place and paved the way for forward-thinking debates today, such as neo-feminism, or the LGBT rights movement.

PORN TO BE FREE is primarily the result of a meeting between the director, Carmine Amoroso, and the leading figures in the porn industry of that time. After two successful feature films, Come mi vuoi and Cover Boy, Carmine has dug into the political side of an essential form of expression in modern day. The film has been made and financed in an entirely independent way. No institution, public or private body has agreed to finance the project. The word "porn" in the title was enough to stop any support for production or distribution. However, we believe that there are people out there who, just like us, want this story to be told, against any form of censorship. This is why we're asking help from the community. Don't take part in censorship, become part of this project and support the production of this film. All assistance, big or small will play an essential role. Please support the sexual revolution told by those who were at its heart.

We have recently finalised a first edit of the film. We now need financing for postproduction in order for the film to be seen on the silver screen. The 15,000€ will allow us to cover these activities:

• Color correction
• Conforming
• First and second DCP copy

These technical steps are absolutely essential to get the film ready for film festivals and theatrical distribution. We believe this is a story that needs to be told on a big screen for an international audience.

Carmine Amoroso: director and screenwriter of PORN TO BE FREE. In 1996, Amoroso wrote and directed Come Mi Vuoi (Embrasse-moi Pasqualino), the first Italian film to have a focus on a transgender character, featuring Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel. The film has been sold worldwide and has since become an essential milestone in queer cinema. In 2007 he directed his second feature Cover Boy. The film was selected in over 90 festivals worldwide and won 40 awards. It was also shortlisted to represent Italy at the Academy Awards alongside Gomorra and Il Divo.

Riccardo Schicchi: Photographer, producer and manager, he was the number one protagonist of Italian pornography in the 70's and 80's. He turned porn into a major consumption good. Because of his numerous court cases and prison sentences, he was nominated the Che Guevara of porn. He launched several key media icons such as Cicciolina, Moana Pozzi and Rocco Siffredi.

Ilona Staller: Known under the name of Cicciolina, she is the most famous and the most controversial porn star of all times. After a childhood in Hungary, she moved to Italy in the early 70's and was key in redefining the limits of what can and can't be shown publicly. Her fight for sexual freedom gave her an iconic status in the eyes of a whole generation. Ilona Staller was also the first porn star to be elected into a national parliament in 1987. In 1991 she married American artist Jeff Koons with whom she has a son, Ludwig. After putting an end to her porn career but without any regrets, she has kept fighting for sexual freedom in prison, for decriminalisation of drugs and against any form of censorship.

Lasse Braun: Braun is the king of Sex Revolution in the 60's and 70's. He fought his whole life for the diffusion of pornography in Europe and the United States. At the end of the 70's he created in Stockholm the company AB Film and produced and directed dozens of films that became porn classics. In 1971 he met Reuben Sturman, the American inventor of the peep show, who became his business partner. in 1974 he was the first director to bring a porn film to the Cannes Film Festival. In 1977, after years of legal actions and successes, he retired from political activism to focus purely on directing and writing.

Giuliana Gamba: In the early 70's Gamba became the first European female porn director under the name of Therese Dunn. That gave her an immediate cult status in the world of feminist pornography. She then chose to work in the field of erotic films before completely changing career as a documentary filmmaker and creating TV series for the Italian public broadcaster.

PORN TO BE FREE (PORNO E LIBERTA') è un documentario di Carmine Amoroso sulla lotta di una generazione che ha combattuto il puritanesimo e la censura per la libertà d'espressione e la libertà sessuale. Nell'Italia degli anni '70, in un paese ancora prigioniero dell'ipocrisia cattolica sul sesso, un gruppo di ribelli inizia una battaglia contro la censura e il comune senso del pudore attraverso l’arma della pornografia. Insieme fanno tremare la chiesa, la politica e le istituzioni.

Con immagini libere ed inedite, il film ripercorre la storia e le battaglie di un gruppo di guerrieri: dall’italiano Lasse Braun che inventa e sdogana la cultura del porno nel mondo a Riccardo Schicchi, maestro di provocazioni e trasgressioni come l’elezione di Cicciolina in Parlamento. Gli altri protagonisti sono Judith Malina, il Living Theatre, Vincenzo Sparagna, Il Male, Le Ore, Frigidaire, Filippo Scozzari, Suor Dentona, Andrea Pazienza, Giuliana Gamba, Helena Velena, Ifix Tchen Tchen, Siné, Il Parco Lambro, Mario Mieli… PORN TO BE FREE (PORNO E LIBERTA') è un viaggio verso l’utopia con una banda di rivoltosi ironici e dissacranti che sognava un mondo più libero e più felice e che ha aperto la strada a numerosi movimenti successivi, dal neo-femminismo alla lotta per i diritti LGBT.

Questo film nasce prima di tutto da un incontro tra il regista, Carmine Amoroso, ed i protagonisti dell'epoca. Dopo due film di fiction, Come mi vuoi e Cover Boy, Carmine si è interessato al lato politico di una forma d'espressione troppo spesso considerata in maniera caricaturale o morbosa. PORN TO BE FREE (PORNO E LIBERTA') è stato realizzato in modo del tutto indipendente. Nessuna istituzione, né pubblica, né privata, ha voluto finanziarci. È bastato leggere la parola “porno” nel titolo per rifiutare ogni apporto produttivo e distributivo. Noi invece crediamo che ci siano persone libere che, come noi, vogliono che questa storia venga raccontata, contro ogni forma di censura. Per questo ci rivolgiamo alla Comunità. Non censurarlo anche tu. Diventa con noi parte di questo film e entra come protagonista nella sua realizzazione. Ogni donazione, non importa se grande o piccola per noi sarà fondamentale. Sostieni la rivoluzione sessuale raccontata da chi l’ha fatta veramente.

Carmine Amoroso: regista, sceneggiatore ha scritto e diretto varie inchieste giornalistiche. È autore della sceneggiatura di Parenti Serpenti, regia di Mario Monicelli. Nel 1996 ha scritto e diretto Come Mi Vuoi, primo film italiano a tematica transgender, con Monica Bellucci e Vincent Cassel. Il film è stato distribuito nel mondo e divenendo negli anni uno dei film più rappresentativi del queer cinema. Nel 2007 ha realizzato il suo secondo lungometraggio Cover Boy. Il film ha rappresentato l’Italia in oltre 90 festival, vincendo 40 premi ed è entrato nella terna dei film candidati dall’Italia per il premio Oscar 2008, assieme a Gomorra e Il Divo. Nel 2008 ha scritto il soggetto del documentario Sound of Morocco per la regia di Giulia Gamba.

Riccardo Schicchi: fotografo, produttore, manager, è stato il protagonista assoluto della pornografia italiana degli anni settanta e ottanta. Ha sghettizzato il porno, sino a farlo diventare un prodotto di largo consumo. Decine di volte denunciato processato e condannato, è stato soprannominato il Che Guevara del porno. È stato l’inventore e lo scopritore di veri e proprie icone mediatiche, da Cicciolina a Moana Pozzi, passando per Rocco Siffredi.

Ilona Staller: in arte Cicciolina, è stata sicuramente la più famosa ma anche la più discussa pornostar di tutti i tempi. Nata in Ungheria e trasferitasi in Italia nei primi anni settanta ha contribuito in maniera decisiva a ridefinire i confini del comune senso del pudore, divenendo un’eroina della liberazione dei costumi sessuali per una generazione intera. Ilona Staller è stata la prima pornostar eletta in un parlamento nel 1987 .Nel 1991 sposa uno degli artisti americani più celebri, Jeff Koons dal cui matrimonio nascerà il figlio Ludwig. Ritiratasi dal porno ma mai pentita, continua a battersi per la libertà sessuale dei carcerati, per la depenalizzazione delle droghe e contro ogni forma di censura.

Lasse Braun (Alberto Ferro): di origine italiana, è stato il re della Sex Revolution degli anni sessanta e settanta. Ha dedicato la vita alla liberalizzazione della pornografia che l’ha visto protagonista in Europa e negli Stati Uniti. Alla fine degli anni sessanta fonda a Stoccolma la AB Film producendo e dirigendo decine di film entrati nella storia del porno. Nel 1971 incontra l’americano Reuben Sturman, l’inventore dei peep show, che diventa suo socio d’affari. Nel 1974 è il primo regista a portare un film porno a Cannes. Nel 1977, dopo anni di lotte, successi e casi giudiziari, lascia l’attività militante continuando quella di regista e scrittore.

Giuliana Gamba: nei primi anni settanta, è stata la prima donna regista in Europea a realizzare film hard sotto lo pseudonimo di Therese Dunn, divenendo emblema del pornofemminismo. In seguito si orienta verso il cinema erotico per poi cambiare completamente genere, firmando documentari politici e serie per la televisione pubblica.
