About the Project
Want to see a size 14-16 woman as the LEAD and LOVE INTEREST in a television show, and have her LOVE her body, NEVER be the butt of the joke, and have a fabulous love life? This is your show.
Want to see Christians question their faith journey when the shit hits the fan? This is your show.
Want to watch a bunch of imperfect humans tangle with what it means to love your neighbor but not judge your neighbor, and maybe not overfeed your neighbor at the potluck? This is your show.
Want to have sex talked about in a real way, and challenge why modern Christianity puts pressure just on girls to be pure? Want to discuss celibacy until couples are married? Maybe not. Maybe that is too much. But yeah, we deal with that on this show too. We also deal with homosexuality on this show. And guess what? It isn't a sin. So, maybe this is your show, and maybe it's not, but I hope maybe I can maybe make ya laugh, think, and possibly change your mind.
Want a show with a wide variety of female leads ages 5-80 (NO JOKE)? THIS IS YOUR SHOW.
Lastly... do you want to be part of me breaking into that exclusive club, and help me produce this sucker guerrilla style? THEN C'MON! I gots perks for ya. Check 'em out in the PERKS section!
ABOUT ME
My name is Ann Mahoney, you may know my work from THE WALKING DEAD (Olivia), SUN RECORDS (Gladys Presley), BAD MOMS (Mousey Mom), RECTIFY (Beth Mitcherson), and most recently SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME and LOGAN LUCKY.
As a Christian (but not that judgmental, asshole kind), and an actress, I have grown increasingly frustrated with two aspects of the Hollywood television production machine:
1. Faith-based shows that: don't speak to me as a Christian who believes the faith journey is not simple, don't show how tremendously hilarious God/Church/Church People are, don't question why we believe what we believe, and don't challenge us to be LESS judgmental of others... aka - MORE Christlike.
2. Television shows that only cast actresses over a size 2 as the "frumpy teacher" or the "funny best friend." If they DO cast an actress who is, say, the size of the average American woman - size 14-16, she is the butt of the joke, she hates her body, and she is DEFINITELY NOT the love interest.
I knew the only way to see the kind of show I want to SEE as a size 14-16 woman, who is a Christian, who wants to explore the craziness of faith and the humor of God - was to WRITE it. SO... I did.
There I was sitting in a pew of my home church in Louisiana. I had just moved back to New Orleans after 6 years in Asheville, NC. My husband and I moved there after Hurricane Katrina when our house was destroyed. I had always heard people talk about the "still small voice" of God talking to you, and frankly, thought it was a load of bull. But dang if I didn't hear that still, small voice that day. And thus, PREACHIN TO THE CHOIR was born. Yes, six years ago. I have been refining the script ever since.
With all the horrific stuff happening in Hollywood right now, I hear the same refrain over and over again - we need more WOMEN in Hollywood, more WOMAN-PRODUCED shows, more DIVERSITY in casting. But I have to tell you, from my standpoint - it has been quite difficult to break into the upper echalon of powerful women in Hollywood... and I am ready to do just that with this show.
THAT is how you can help.
What if you haven't got that spare $200 to give to the campaign but you are FOR all these things?? You can help by doing two things: sharing this campaign, and praying. If you believe in string theory, which this Physics lovin' Christian does, you know that prayer WORKS.
THANK YOU for your SUPPORT!
