Overview
This campaign will enable me to work with Special Occasion Films Led by Cyrus Duff and Edward Columbia to create a Proof of Concept in order to create a full length film documenting the life of Roberto Lugo. Lugo's life story is a compelling example of what can happen when people of color are given the opportunity to engage in the visual arts. It is a story of overcoming obstacles of race, education, poverty, obesity and mental health. Join us in sharing Roberto's story.

Short Summary

I am a potter, social activist, spoken word poet, and educator. All of these roles are rooted in my childhood.  As a child my first exposure to art was “Graffiti."

Today my graffiti is defacing social inequality. I see my pottery as a process of transforming the ground we walk on into something we eat from;  we search all day for the perfect spot to put it on display. In many ways this transformation of tragedy into triumph is a metaphor for my life’s story.

I have developed a studio practice that fluidly communicates with diverse audiences. This is why working in film is incredibly important. I hope to connect with audiences outside of the ceramics cannon in order to illustrate the places where my work relates to others fields. The medium of film is the most accessible medium for many potential viewers.

The hope is not that we will create a influx of new potters but that folks can see the addagge "you can be anything you want" is true. Pottery is not just for a singular race or culture. It is representative of the human story and the contemporary urban experience needs its own voice.

What We Need & What You Get

  • Your support will go to help us:
    • rent necessary equipment for filming
    • pay for space where we will film
    • pay for editing, and production
  • We have spent much time considering how to bring our vision to life and limiting expenses.
  • We have many sought-after professionals who are offering their services for very reasonable rates.

  • Our perks will include hand-made ceramics from the artist himself, prints, and even a personal visit with dinner.
  • If our goal is not reached we will still film and use what's raised to create this proof of concept.

The Impact

  • This film will help encourage:
    • more artists of color to seek careers in the visual arts.
    • Act as an example the everyday barriers people of color face while pursuing their dreams.
    • This project will not work as a traditional documentary but synthesize the biographical with the artist's performative work.

Risks & Challenges

  • I am dedicated to seeing this project through and feel confident about achieving a film that will connect with a diverse audience.
  • We are filming in the cold and will work in sometimes unsafe environments. The authenticity of these experiences are important to this production.
