Restless Productions is an interdisciplinary creation company committed to collective research, development, and presentation of new works of dance, music, theatre, and installation art. It is a kind of constellation—a varying set of collaborations. The company is co-directed by choreographer Claire French and composer James Maxwell, whose collaborative relationship spans over a decade. We share a desire to invent and refine a collective practice driven by the question: What is to be gained, discovered, experimented with in the live format that is impossible elsewhere?

The Moment of Forgetting, a full length dance and music work scheduled to premiere in  October 2012,  explores in movement, sound, and performance, the daily human experience of being abandoned by one’s knowledge. Our interest lies not in that which is forgotten, per se, but in the strangeness of the phenomenon itself; how do we forget, and what does it mean when we do? An encounter with forgetting gives us a shock; the shock of being met with an absence where we most expected a presence. The moment of forgetting itself articulates the boundary between all that is past, and the meaning of all that will follow.

With a cast of 5 dancers and 4 musicians, the work places movement and music on an equal footing, each inhabiting the performance space as an equal partner. The performers relate in the spirit of chamber music; an ensemble of dancers and musicians. One discipline implicates the other.

The Impact

Restless believes in creating an experience for dance audiences to engage in new music and new music audiences to engage with dance, and while the two disciplines are often experienced at the same time, the degree to which we integrate music and dance, dancers and musicians has already been recognized locally as “original and exciting.”

By the time we present The Moment of Forgetting in October, we will have employed a team of 22 high-calibre performers, creators, designers, technicians, and administrators. In the face of growing challenges to arts funding in Canada, we are excited to be taking an entrepreneurial approach by self-presenting, seeking co-production opportunities, and building strong connections with the people who matter most—our audience—through fundraising campaigns like this one. Indeed, we have already raised close to $10,000 toward the project through private donations and co-production partnerships, and will be applying for public funding at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels. We will be also seeking corporate sponsorship for materials and supplies, and will be selling advertising space in the printed programmes for the show. And of course, we hope that reaching out to the bigger public will put “bums in seats”, thus pushing up box office revenue and helping us meet the total production costs.

What We Need & What You Get

This particular campaign is directed toward funding our spring creation period, which will take place between April and June 2012. Future campaigns will focus on funding the final creation work with the dancers and musicians, and ultimately the technical productions costs. Because Restless is focused on the notion of equal collaboration between dance and music, we have divided our fundraising target of $6000.00 over two separate campaigns: one categorized under “dance”, with a target of $3000.00, and another categorized under “music”, with a matching target of $3000.00.

As a token of our appreciation for your support, we’ve assembled an exciting collection of perks, including programmes signed by the cast, signed production photos, DVDs of the live performance, invitations to a closed preview showing, (and for the musicians among you) a copy of the original score, and for the very generous, dinner with Co-Artistic Directors Claire French and James Maxwell (travel unfortunately not included). Obviously, many of these perks won't exist before the show hits the stage, and thus can only be delivered after the October premiere, but we will send out thank you cards to all donors in the meantime, and follow up with the official perks as soon as they become available.

Other Ways You Can Help

As hard-working, professional artists, we understand perhaps more than most that not everyone can express their support in dollars and cents. But even if you can’t donate, you can still help by spreading the word and letting your friends, peers, and colleagues know about Restless Productions and The Moment of Forgetting. The most important component of “crowd-sourcing” is the crowd!

Thanks for your time.
