What is the Common
Room: Heroes vs. Villains?:
Rhapsody Collective, now in its third cycle, is challenging
our artists in a way we’ve never explored before! As we do each cycle, we give
our teams a theme to create upon. This cycle, we’ve not only given them a
theme, we’ve added a subtheme! In cycle 3, we’re exploring The Common Room:
Heroes vs. Villains! We will be presenting six brand new plays that all take
place on the same set that also capture the essence of the age-old battle,
heroes vs. villains!
One of the great challenges is how we can present six
potentially very different stylistic plays that all use the same exact room.
The COMMON ROOM that has been chosen as our location is the common room of a
college dorm. The personalities and situations that occur in this very public
yet private place is an amazing location to explore the heroes vs. villains
idea. Who are these heroes and villains that inhabit this college?
Why we need YOUR
help:
In order to bring these six plays to life, we need your
help. This April, we will present our six teams’ plays in true workshop style
at Alchemical Theatre Laboratory! Our goal is to charge a suggested donation as
admission so you have the opportunity to see all six presentations and not feel
as if you need to pick and choose.
This cycle, since we have a more “realistic” theme, we need
to create the space for these plays to live in. Part of our budget will be
devoted to create an iconic common room. We hope we can fill our space with items
including a couch, a coffee table, end tables, a study table, chairs, lamps,
and a community board that each team will be contributing an item to.
Where the funds are
going:
Our ultimate goal is $5500 and here is how it will
breakdown:
Rent our space at Alchemical Theatre Laboratory for tech and
performances - $2500
Rent rehearsal spaces for all six teams - $1200
Scenic Elements - $1000
Print Programs and Promotional Materials - $200
Other Production Needs- $600
What is Rhapsody
Collective?:
Rhapsody Collective
is a group of young theater artists dedicated to creating new works from the
ground up. Rhapsody Collective strives to foster new and innovative ideas in a
safe environment of peers. The goal is to create, not produce. Over the course
of a cycle, the ensemble of actors, directors, playwrights, and dramaturgs are
randomly broken up into teams to create a brand new piece. The challenge for
each team is “freedom within restrictions.” Each cycle has a theme each piece
must incorporate. Additionally, the roles created must be written specifically
for the actors on their team. At the end of the cycle, each play will be
presented in one harmonious rhapsody.
If we exceed our goal (which would be awesome!), those funds
will go to future Rhapsody Collective projects including an abridged Summer
cycle, Playground Reads, and the start of Cycle 4 in the fall of 2015!
