What Are We?

We are a documentary focusing on a story of bread that we, and most, haven’t heard of before. Rinascita is about the rebirth of ancient grain bread-making used in Italian bakeries. The ancient grains make tastier bread and a healthier loaf for the consumer and the planet!

The new flour created from the ancient grains in these bakeries can bring back dead soil back to life. The grains carry many nutrients. Once it’s watered, the nutrients are distributed back into the ground, bringing once dead dirt back to usable soil and making it possible to be reused into another crop after harvest. So, if you are a food connoisseur, an environmentalist, a general bread lover, or something else, this is the project for you!

But overall, we enjoy bread more than the average person and have always been interested in the science behind bread. Having never questioned their process or ingredients till now, this documentary focuses on the wheat that not only allows us to appreciate the loaf more but also to come behind the scenes of one of the most infamous grains in the world.

Is it not crucial for people to know the history of where food comes from and to learn about new ways we can improve old ingredients? The world is changing quickly, and so is the food industry. But mostly, it is essential to show people what they are doing in Italy, and the significant changes in the food quality through the ingredients and techniques which are possible in the United States. There is always more than one way to do something, and it often just takes a simple mindset change. - it’s just about how much you care, and we care.

Please considering contributing to this fundraiser, as the filmmaking art-form can be quite expensive, and we need YOUR help to achieve our goal and make this documentary great.

FUNDRAISING GOAL: $8000

The Global Impact.

In a world that mass produces everything, the quality of our food begins to fall. For example, we bulk harvest flour, strip it of its nutrients, and then genetically modify it to put some nutrients back in - but it’s all fake. Introducing this topic to a global market can show that this grain is better for people and won’t raise the cost of bread that much, especially if we can grow it on the same scale we’ve been producing GMO flour.

This movement is all over Italy. Highlighting it by featuring a couple of bakeries can help show others that this is a cause to care about. It’s not changing Italy’s ways but informing people that some different ingredients and techniques can improve the overall quality of life and food. It’s a mindset, and if we can even impact one or two other bakeries to change the flour they use, we’re already making a positive impact for the future. It’s highlighting a piece of a long lost culture.

The Local Impact.

Rinascita is about creating awareness of the local bakers in these regions. It allows us to bring light to an issue many people worldwide are unaware of, uplift these stories positively, and hopefully bring business to these bakeries. Our documentary also brings awareness to those who live in Italy, showing them that this is a part of their culture that theses bakeries are fighting to bring back.

The Impact on YOU.

Bread is the base of food. So much can be made atop a simple bread recipe, yet we’re eating genetically modified grain with fake nutrients pumped into it because of how we farm.

This process could be the key to our farming crisis in the United States and elsewhere, by allowing us to grow more grain and regrow our dead farmland. The new flour tastes better, has nutrients to keep you full longer, and yes, the cost of bread may go up 50 cents, but that cost is for something that tastes and smells better, is healthier for you and the planet, and makes you feel good.

The Team

Katrin comes from Colorado Springs, Colorado and has always loved the outdoors. Her passion for nature led her down the path of documentaries and now she hopes to be able to tell compelling stories about nature and human nature through the lens of a camera. She has worked on numerous projects in every aspect, both documentary and narrative. Recently she edited a documentary about regenerative farming and is currently editing a film about tourism's impact on Iceland.

"I've always connected with Italy - whether it be the food (I could eat pasta every day) or the people I’ve met I’ve always gravitated towards that part of my heritage. My mom's grandma was Italian and so growing up my mom would make me recipes her grandmother had shared with her and tell me stories of the traditions they used to share at the dinner table (the feast of the 7 fish anyone)? It’s always been important to know that aspect of my life and being able to go there and see the places my family grew up and eat the food they ate really connects me to this project".

Tessa Kuhlman is from Lincoln, Nebraska and has found a love for documentary making through journalism and film - world travel was just an amazing bonus. Telling others’ stories to their greatest potential is the ultimate pursuit. Tessa is a filmmaker with an entirely traditional background in the arts. She came to film for narrative and ended up falling in love with the creative process on and off set. Currently, she’s pursuing an internship with Universal Studios while continuing documentary work.

Louise Dill is a Producer of this documentary. She is a bread and documentary connoisseur making her very excited to work on this project. She has interned with Coolfire Studios and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Production Office, giving her the tools she needs to be a successful and well-prepared producer. She works on countless student films, varying jobs starting from pre-production to post-production. Recently, she has worked on professional feature films in Manhattan, New York, and commercial sets in St. Louis, Missouri. Putting her knowledge from class into practice, Louise is equipped to handle any obstacle or time-sensitive issue with professionalism. She loves working in creative and collaborative environments and is excited to learn more about bread and this new ground-breaking process.

Daniela is our Social Media Coordinator. Originally from Roanoke, Virginia and has always had a passion for the arts. She fell in love with setting the scene and telling stories through the art of film. Documentary work is new territory, but working on this has made her fall in love with telling people’s stories. Daniela has worked on both film and theater productions, focusing on the design and creative process to compel audiences. Currently, she is working along a design team to create the set for SCAD’s Sitcom production this Fall.
