Short Summary
My name is Edoardo, the writer and director of "Room 208". I come from Milan, Italy and my passion for film brought me to study in London at Met Film School, where I am attending the 2 year BA in Film-making. Between 2017 and 2018 I attended a course at Central Film School, where I learnt the basics of practical film-making. I have a great love for cinema, especially the art of storytelling and I hope I will get a chance to share my stories.
The story is about a dilemma, revenge vs forgiveness. Vincent is seeking revenge for the death of his wife. Dennis, who accidentally killed her in a car accident, is suffering due to his sense of guilt. When Vincent is about to kill Dennis, he finds him about to take his own, and recognizing his huge sense of guilt, he understands that the best revenge is forgiveness. Dennis sinks in his desperation and kills himself.
I am very passionate about this story because I think, in certain degrees, it can apply to all of us. We have all been hurt by someone at some point in our lives and we've had the desire of getting back at them. Hopefully with this story, when people will find themselves in a similar situation, they will take a step back and get out of their head for a moment to understand that also that person is or will suffer for what he did. We all have a consciousness and we all pay for ourselves for what we did.
What We Need & What You Get
The short film is set in a hotel. We decided to re-create the hotel in a set for two reasons: it will give us more freedom as we can make the room bigger, secondly it will end up being less expensive as we would have to book two rooms for three days, one room for the shooting and one for the equipment. Most of the funding would go into building the hotel room, the corridor and the reception. We will have to buy dry walls, furniture and small props to give authenticity to the location. In total we will need about 500-600£ for all these expenses. In addition I would like to bring the actors in for a day of rehearsal, which would come to an additional cost of 200£.
I am very passionate about film-making but above all, about telling stories. Men have been telling stories for thousands of years. We used sit around campfires and share with each other our experiences. I think that nothing much has changed since then, it's just the medium that we are using that has. This is the feeling that I want to give to the audience, like we are all sitting around a campfire listening to a story that can help us to forget the outside world for a brief moment.
This is a low budget short film and any contribution will be extremely helpful. Creativity comes from being able of finding a solution in limiting circumstances. So, even if I won't reach the entire goal, I will still try and use what I have at my dispose to complete the film.
The Impact
With this project, I'm trying to use many different influences in cinema history to build a better film. I still tried to find an idea that felt different, with a different perspective, but at the same time using films that have already been made to help me bring this idea to life. By doing this I think I will hope that the viewer will still be entertained and will gain a new perspective.
I have previously written and directed one short film called: "The Last Night". It was my first ever project and it helped gain experience in making a film. I know feel much more confident in managing the set and finding quick solutions whenever there is a problem.
Risks & Challenges
One of the main challenges I might face is in the production design. Because we have to build the whole set, it might not look realistic enough and one of the main obstacles to achieve this goal is time and money. Although the production designer assigned to the project is extremely talented and capable, with your help, I believe we will be able to exceed our expectations.
