What is Run For Currahee?
![]()
Run For Currahee is a solo 800+ mile run from Normandy, France to the Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden, Germany to be undertaken by me, Kathryn Lindquist. This will be the first time this route has been run. Run For Currahee will benefit the World War II veteran related non-profit Camp Toccoa at Currahee. It will begin on the Anniversary of D-Day, June 6 and end August 8.
But first, we have to get to Normandy! This campaign will raise funds to cover travel costs for myself and my crew-members, Kate and Phoebe, so we can do the most good for Camp Toccoa at Currahee. We need your help to get us to Europe so we can work toward our goal of raising $50,000 for Camp Toccoa at Currahee!
Two years ago I competed in a race up and down Currahee Mountain at Camp Toccoa. Paratroopers during World War II summitted Currahee daily as training for the War. These men are my heroes. As I finished the race that day runner-up, I knew that I wanted to preserve their stories, the mountain, and the training grounds of Camp Toccoa, that taught me the true meaning of perseverance, strength and diligence.
Run For Currahee is the project that will make that idea a reality. We just need your support to ensure its success!
What Will Run For Currahee Accomplish?
Our Vision: to preserve an important part of history, tell the stories of our World War II veterans, and preserving their legacies by raising money for the non-profit Camp Toccoa at Currahee: Legacy of Leadership.
Our Mission: to successfully run 800+ miles from Normandy, France to the Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden, Germany, becoming the first person to cover the route on foot as I follow in the footsteps of the soldiers who liberated Europe during World War II. I hope my success will inspire and promote healthy and active lifestyles.
Our Rock: we are inspired by the perseverance and dedication of the soldiers who fought for our freedom during World War II. Less than 1 million World War II veterans remain alive today and their untold stories inspire us to make Run For Currahee a success, so younger generations learn of their sacrifices.
What Will We Use Your Donations For?
We need to make this run possible so we can spread awareness for our cause. Our first goal is to fund this run, after our basic needs are met, as outlined below, all of our additional money raised will go to Camp Toccoa at Currahee. We believe this run will draw attention to a worthy cause and has the potential to raise a significant amount for it. Myself and my support team are all volunteers, we just need logistic costs covered.
By helping us fund this run:
-
Supporting our three person team in Europe, this includes an RV, which will serve as our transportation and living quarters from June - August, food, water and gasoline. ($1,200 per flight; $5,000 for the RV; $3,000 for food and water, or $15 per person daily; $500 for gasoline).
Please be aware that the donation of resources is just as appreciated as a monetary donation.
This campaign will not cover personal leisure or expenses. Donations will only be used to cover what it takes for us to get to Normandy and stay supported in our journey.
Why Did We Choose Camp Toccoa?
Once Run For Currahee is funded and we are in Normandy, France, all money raised from our efforts will go directly to Camp Toccoa at Currahee. This non-profit was founded to preserve the legacy of the four Army Airborne regiments that originated in Toccoa, GA, including the "Band of Brothers" made famous by HBO's award-winning miniseries. This non-profit the only organization specifically dedicated to the Airborne men who trained at the Camp and became arguably the finest soldiers in history.

Camp Toccoa takes pride in preserving the legacies and stories of the men and women of the Greatest Generation, and in a time where we lose over 400 World War II veterans a day, with less than 1 million left, it is more important than ever to protect their legacies and tell their stories. Camp Toccoa at Currahee will do so by:
- Protecting and rebuilding the historic Camp Toccoa site for hands-on public education.
- Celebrating the contributions of the veterans who trained there and Active Duty military by building Wall of Honor and educating visitors about their experiences.
- Promoting well-being through athletic competition and outdoor activities including a camping ground for the Boy Scouts of America.
- Protecting the natural environment of Currahee Mountain and Camp Toccoa so future generations can explore, enjoy and learn the meaning of conservation.
Risks & Challenges:
The biggest risk and challenge I face, besides funding and travel logistics, is the sheer distance of the run. Many people wonder if running 800+ miles over a two month period, or roughly a half marathon a day, is possible. The answer is a resounding yes. This is why:
- Training for this event has taken place over the last 4 months, and will peak with training comfortably at 70-80 miles of running per week.
- I am a successful long distance and ultra-runner and regularly competes and trains at a similar capacity to this event. In other words, I am conditioned for the tough physical challenges this will will present and am eager to take them on.
- If injury does occur, our crew-member is a runner herself and is prepared to step up to fill in the necessary mileage.
