WHY isn't plastic the best idea for sports gear?
Almost 100% of sports gear available is made of pure plastic. Plastic means the fibres are fully synthetic, made of melted plastic granulate typically from crude oil and a wild mix of other chemicals. The most commonly known plastic fabrics are Polyester, Nylon (aka Polyamide), Polypropylene, or Elastan (aka Spandex).

There are 3 major downsides of plastic textiles. First, MICROPLASTIC. Currently, our most pressing enemy.* It´s produced when you wash your running gear in the washing machine. Millions and millions of pounds are floating in our oceans. Synthetic textiles are one of the main polluters. Second, non-biodegradability. Plastic stays alive for centuries and does not dissolve easily. Third, toxicity. Scientists have highlighted the toxic impact of plastic in the ocean. Doesn't seem to be the smartest thing to wear on your sweaty body while working out right?!

Minimal Plastic - Minimal Footprint - Happy Running
It is out of question that we need alternatives. The current trend of using recycled plastic from the oceans cannot be the long term solution. New plastic shirt = new pollution. A great alternative for running gear needs to be functional, regenerative, and biodegradable. We studied fibres and fabrics in terms of performance and sustainability. For our 1st collection we are replacing plastic fibres with great natural and non-harmful chemical fibres: Merino wool and Tencel Lyocell.

Merino wool is the most functional natural fibre for active usage. It's fibres are very fine and super soft, it can perfectly deal with different temperatures and moisture. With its antimicrobial strengths, bad odor doesn't stick to it like cheap polyester fabrics.
Tencel Lyocell fibre is a modern viscose that is wood based (eucalyptus, beech trees). It is produced by the Austrian manufacturer Lenzing. In some ways it performs similar to Merino wool, but 2 specific strengths are its softness and its cooling effect. Together, Merino and Tencel are an unbeatable team.
Our 1st Collection
The collection consists of 4 pieces. The lightweight knitted shirt, the woven short, and the knitted tights in long and short. While the shirt and short are made with 100% non-plastic fibres, the tights still need a tiny touch of Elastan to be strong and flexible (less than 10%).

The cords we use are made of 100% Tencel. The elastic waistbands are made of natural rubber and organic cotton. Label tags are made of woven cotton. We use screen printing with water based colors for the logo prints.

After coming home from your run you can simply put the gear on a hanger and hang it into the window. Let the air do the rest. It's Fast drying and the odor vanishes. You don't have to wash this gear as often as your plastic gear. That's good for the textile, good for the environment, and saves you work. Thanks Merino for the epic antimicrobial goodness!

The shorts will be available in 2 colors (color selection available once the campaign is over). Either you chose the beautiful olive green or you go classy with anthracite-black.

Shirt and tights are sewn with high quality flat lock seams. This means they lay flat on your skin and will not chaf.

Eco-Conscious without the Sacrifice
In the past, eco-friendly gear usually meant you had to sacrifice some sort of functional or technical aspect of the product, but we have managed to keep that integrity while being friendlier to our planet. Being passionate runners on our own we analyzed which performance features our running gear needs to fulfill and considered this for our fabric selection.

The fabric combination offers many perks, fast drying being one of the best.

Wouldn't be a good running shirt if it didn't vaporize that sweat, now would it?

The 50/50 blend of Merino Wool and Tencel Lyocell is woven into a super lightweight fabric.

To bring the pieces in harmony which each other we integrated a white piping as design element in every piece. All together the outfit looks dynamic and elegant without being glossy or attracting attention. Beautiful understatement.

Our Story

Hey! We’ve been working on Runamics for months and are stoked to bring it to life and share it with you! We, Robbie + Steffen met for coffee one day through a mutual connection and from there Runamics quickly developed into a real and exciting concept. We are not only excited to grow this company and see where it can go, but we really want to make a real difference in the world. We don't just want to create a product, we want to create awareness and a massive change in status quo.
Here's our Team:

Running should make you feel free and happy... it shouldn’t be accompanied by any bad conscience.
Our vision is to become the #1 running brand for eco-conscious runners. Every runner out there should run with a smile on their face, not with a fragment of bad conscience, that the gear they are wearing is bad for them or the planet. And in the end we want to show our kids and following generations, that plastic is not the solution for everything ;-)

"Microplastic as our currently most pressing enemy" explained: we know, that as everything in live is based on trade offs. Once you make a decision for something you make one against another thing at same time. The same happens to us as a company. There are so many problems to tackle in the (sports) textile industry that we can´t solve all problems at once. But we plan to tackle them subsequently. Be it the dyeing, finishing, or the logistics. In the end we want to make sports gear with the least invasive impact on our environment and a great impact for the people who make them. But for now, we are seeing the hidden microplastic tragedy as the most pressing issue. We need alternatives. Now.
Risks & Challenges
The previous months have been very intense, full of great ideas, challenges, and learnings. It took us a while to get to this point where we can share the products with the world.
We are happy to be a team of experienced people from the sports textile industry, creative, and business world to make things happen in a professional way.
However, as in every occasion, there are things that are not under our control. We are working with a great network of selected partners. But this also means we are reliant on those. The seamstress factory needs the fabric from the knitting company, which needs the yarn from the spinning company, which needs the raw material from the farms or other suppliers, and so on. If one has a delay the whole process could delay.
So you see, despite every optimism and detailed planning, things can happen. Whenever any time delay or anything else occurs, we guarantee you that you will be the first to know about this. In any case, you will get a regular update from us about the status of your products.
