Project Status

SAFE BET is a film that has already been shot. I have included a video which has a few clips (ungraded and not mastered sound) just so you see what has already been done. The film needs to go into post-production. This campaign is about raising post-production funding only.

The movie

SAFE BET is an action comedy that follows the adventure of 2 idiotic novice robbers, FRANK ( WANDILE MOLEBATSI ) and KHAYA ( GODFREY THOBEJANE ), who decide to take their boss's money and spin it on a fixed boxing. Unknown to our 'incomplete heroes' a girl pair with agenda joins them but that's not all their short-lived adventure attracts. Even one DOC ( LUTHULI DLAMINI ) who develops interests on the boys' money. SAFE BET touches on life issues, our never ending quest for more bucks, love, family sacrifice and general stupidity.

BegTech

I don’t like asking for money (feels strange saying that in here) so in 2013 I decided to shoot my second film, SAFE BET. We have spent R 255, 000 (about US$ 25, 000) of our hard earned savings in order to shoot and finish the film - and we did finish shooting. We had an over-zealous schedule so we went over, which meant we put in every penny kept for balance payments and post-production just so we at least finish shooting the film. Now we are proudly broke. This film is not only special to me but to the rest of the cast and crew who worked so hard and deserve to see the final product.

I am hoping that bringing you on board this project can assist us complete our film, grab some pop-corn and nervously watch as the lights go off and the curtains adjust and BOOM!

Our target is $ 30, 000 – only! This will help us complete the film and realise our dream, however, there is more to be done… if this campaign goes beyond its target to $ 50, 000 we will be able to even buy music rights and add more appealing visual effects. If it gets to $ 80, 000, we will be able to implement 5.1 Dolby sound, do a DCP (Digital Cinema Projection) conversion and other outputs for different film festivals across the globe. Should we by God’s grace get to over $ 100, 000, then we will have a crazy marketing campaign for the film and more people will know about the film, meaning more will then get to watch it in Cinemas. As our contributor, no matter how much you give, you would not only have helped us realise our dream, you will be a part of it.

What We Need – the breakdown

Why do we need $ 30, 000 ( remember in South Africa we use the “Rand” and for now $1 will roughly get us R10, hence we need about R 300, 000 ). Broken down as follows;

Editing (Offline, Online, Trailer & final mix)                $ 12, 000

VFX & Animation                                                        $ 5, 450

Sound Design (Dialogue cleanup, ADR, scoring)     $ 8, 000

Colour grading                                                            $ 3, 000

Transfer to various formats                                        $ 1, 550

What You Get besides kisses

In the event you join us in realising our dream, we have some goodies for you as a token of our appreciation. Most of these goodies will have something to do with the movie; this is because you would have assisted us complete our movie so we believe your interests and best ‘thank you’ perks should be centered around the movie. Please note that the poster images are all draft and might change in future. Some of the perks have quantity limits. The delivery periods indicated are under the assumption that we raise the entire budget, if we do not reach the targets then these may not be fulfilled as indicated, however, (you might agree it makes sense to channel everything towards the movie) we will keep our proud sponsors updated.

A. The “Eita” package [Donate $5 or more]

Seeing you are already reading, you may enjoy some South African words and fun speak, a bit of "Zulu slang". Eita means "Hi", Eita can also be used to catch someone attention.

Get a full size signed SAFE BET movie poster delivered to you (add postage fee if you are outside South Africa), an electronic version of the poster will be email to you. Additionally, get 3 movie wallpapers. You can sputter these all over your computer or tablet screens as evidence of “the movie I funded”

B. The "Ola" package [Donate $15 or more]

Here is another slang education, "Ola" means "Hi", It's has similar meaning like Eita can also be used to catch someone attention. Ola obviously extends to other nations.

Get all perks in A as well our movie-money. Our currency has our former President Nelson Mandela’s head so we figured, why not put our Director’s head in the movie money used in the film. We did and he is yours for a cool souvenir. Add $3 for every additional movie note you want (in case you want to give a gift to someone else).

There are 1, 000 notes allocated to this perk.

C. The "Sho!" package [Donate $30 or more]

Slang education, "Sho" is an expression of agreement. When some says "Ngizokubulala (I'll kill you) and you say "Sho!", bang, you die so watch it.

Get all perks in “A”. Then some movie swag on and show the world that you are a proud supporter of independent filmmakers and you made a movie. We use basic round neck short sleeve t’ shirts as we are only communicating the message.

There are 200 t’ shirts in this perk.

D. The "Nda!" package [Donate $80 or more]

"Nda" is a Vhenda (one of the biggest tribes in South Africa) greeting. It also says "Hi" but with a little more respect attached, interestingly, Nda is limited to males i.e. Males are the ones that say "Nda".

Get all perks in “A”, “B” and “C”. Get 1 of 50 VIP tickets to the film’s official premiere or the festival screening in your area when the film makes a turn in your home. Get an unlimited invitation to the film’s launch party and dance the night with the stars.

E. The "Aa!" package [Donate $150 or more]

"Aa" is a Vhenda greeting for "Hi", it is used by women.

Get 1 of 200 personal copy of the movie you funded, signed by the Director. We’ll put your name under “Special thanks to our sponsors”

F. The "Eish" package [Donate $250 or more]

Eish is an interesting one, used when things have really gone bad. Its the most common expression and is not really claimed by a particular tribe or race. If Clarence Carter was South African, he would have said "Eish" when that man walked in through the door.

Get the broken gun used by our lead actor in an attempted tote club robbery. We must warn you that it doesn’t work anymore and it’s a toy. Watch the video below.

There is only "ONE" gun for this perk.

G. The "Howzit" package [Donate $500 or more]

Another greeting that crosses all tribes and races.

Get 1 of 4 special dinner dates for you and your partner with the film’s Director or one/two of the lead roles.

H. The "Voetsek" package [Donate $ 1, 000 or more]

Voetsek is an expression of anger, usually used on a person of smaller status that the one speaking the latter.

Get the Doc’s tailor made full suit, shirt, tie and belt – hilariously unwashed.

There is only 1 x Doc's "unwashed" suit.

I. The "Ngoku" package [Donate $ 5, 000 or more]

Ngoku is a Xhosa word for now, it expresses urgency or defines time. Ngoku (now, today). Ngomso (tomorrow).

Get 1 of 5 front credit of “Executive Producer” and any 4 perks of your choice.

J. The "Ngakara" package [Donate $ 10, 000 or more]

Ngakara is a slang word used to refer to a rich person, usually a man.

Get 1 of 5 front credits “Executive Producer” credit included also in the Film’s Poster credit block with option for equity ownership in the film.

Finally, what happens if we don’t reach our entire goal? Well, we will most definitely do something from offline editing to printing posters but we will for sure put any funds received to use and we will finish the movie using other funding techniques or simply save up and do it ourselves. This might take a little longer to complete the film so you are still a very important part of this journey.

The Impact

SAFE BET is like any comedy film meant to get people laughing while addressing one of life’s key elements, money and our quest for getting more of it. You may agree that this world needs to laugh & love more. Everybody needs to see this.

After making my first feature hit flick film called “48”, I realised I had a sense of humour, I remember the entire crew and cast breaking down on several occasions with laughter on set. The successes of 48 have given us all courage to make SAFE BET with further guarantees of success as we’ve learnt quiet a lot since 2011.

Other Ways You Can Help

Well, not everybody who has a will has a way, so if you cannot assist us financially, you may help by spreading the word about our campaign. You probably know folks that might be willing to assist, send them a link, share this page, post it onto your wall or use the Indiegogo share tools.

And that’s all there is to it.
