Who We Are
Hello! My name is Dawn Geras,
I am the President of Save Abandoned Babies, a not-for-profit organization and volunteer group dedicated to saving babies from being illegally, and often fatally, abandoned. Our grassroots effort began in March of 2000 when one of our members read a newspaper article about a baby found in a Chicago dumpster. We quickly learned that other states were addressing this horrible and growing problem with "Safe Haven Laws."
The Save Abandoned Babies volunteers drafted a Safe Haven Law and lobbied for its passage. This resulted in the Abandoned Newborn Infant Protection Act, which unanimously passed both the Illinois House and Senate and was signed into Illinois law in August of 2001. We have now saved 94 babies since the law was passed! The Save Abandoned Babies Foundation is focused on increasing awareness and telling desperate girls and women that this safe, legal, option exists.
The Illinois Safe Haven Law
The Illinois Safe Haven Law states that parents can hand their unharmed baby,
30 days old or younger, to personnel at any hospital, fire station or police
station and walk away, no questions asked.
No attempt will be made to contact the birth parents. The baby will be cared for and placed in a
loving home for adoption. The law makes the process completely
private, legal, safe and supportive.
We Need You!
This campaign is very important to me, as my mission is simple, "to save the lives of newborns that might otherwise be abandoned unsafely in Illinois." In order to do this, I need your HELP!!
Our goal is to raise $9,400, which is $100 for each of the 94 babies we have saved to date! It's small in comparison to how many innocent infants have lost their lives even though there were safe options available. As a not-for-profit organization run completely by volunteers, we rely solely on the donations of generous people like you, and you can rest assured that 100% of your contribution will go toward creating awareness off the Safe Haven Laws and ultimately saving a child's life!
