We have till August 31st to vacate our current space!
Our Story
Maker’s Asylum is Mumbai’s first maker space which gives just about anyone the opportunity to learn, use the tools, and build things.
We started about two years ago, operating from a closet-sized garage in the suburbs. We had one 3D Printer, power and hand tools that were donated by well-wishers. We had a handful of members that gathered to build tables, simple machines and toyed around with electronics. People started to share knowledge and materials to build projects together. Soon, this casual bunch of DIY enthusiasts grew to a sizeable group of members who didn’t fit in the room any longer.
Entrepreneurs joined in and used the space to develop their prototypes since it was cost-effective. Students milled in so that they could practically use what they had studied in school.
Our Family
Maker's Asylum recently registered as a not-for-profit organisation. For the last six months, our space has been sponsored by a well-wisher design school. Here, we organise regular workshops so students can learn more thoroughly. We offer talks by industry experts so the community can have access to them and their real-world experiences. We encourage build-groups so that the community can put their different skills to test by building something wonderful together. The space also allows small start-ups to build their ideas and crowd-source tips from the community.
Currently, we are a community of 140 members with 500 footfalls from curious minds every month and 6,000 social media supporters.
Challenges
The good part is that we’ve ignited the Maker Movement in India. The bad part — we’ve lost the space we’ve called home for the last six months. The design school that let us use a portion of their cafeteria for our activities needs us to vacate. We have till August 31.
In order to continue feeding the hungry community of Makers, we need to find a new space to rent, and soon!
For our community, the risk of losing the space means projects being abandoned midway, practical learning being put on hold and tinkers left without the access to tools that make their ideas grow.
Why We Need Your Help
We’re raising funds to rent out a new space that will support the strength of the community. The funds will help us pay off debts incurred after purchasing the tools. Without your help, we risk losing the space and rendering our growing family of makers homeless.
You can help us MAKE this happen.
