Overview
Who could forget little Alan Kurdi, age 3, who drowned at sea as he and his family fled war-torn Syria. The world looked on in horror at the images of his lifeless body on the shore. Fast forward one year later… the horror hasn’t stopped. Refugee children fleeing unimaginable danger are still drowning. That’s why we’ve launched our first-ever Search & Rescue ship, but we need your support. Help us stay afloat and save lives at sea.

OCTOBER 12 - UPDATE:

We are excited to announce that starting today, your donation can help us reach twice as many children with our $25K Match.  We are grateful to a generous anonymous donor that has stepped forward with an offer to match our crowdfunding gift dollar for dollar

The match will be available from October 12th through October 31, 2016 or until the match is met.  Your donation will multiply to help save more lives at sea.

The World’s Tragedy: Children Are Drowning at Sea

The issues may be complex, but Save the Children’s goal is simple: Together, we must save children from drowning.

Every single day, hundreds of people, fleeing for their lives from violence, deprivation and war, are crowding onto boats that are barely seaworthy to seek refuge on Europe’s shores – by attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

It’s an unbearable ordeal, and especially scary for children. Cast off from the north African coast, desperate people are facing days at sea, packed tightly together often without life jackets, parched with thirst but soaked in seeping seawater, trying to control an unstable boat, while tormented by the fear they may never reach land. Too many never do.

Nearly 300,000 people have risked this treacherous journey so far this year. And the number of children - 90% of them traveling alone - has increased by two-thirds.

Tragically, an estimated 3,200 people have drowned this year – babies, children and pregnant women among them - and the small bodies of drowned children are seldom recovered, quickly disappearing below the waves.

We will not stand by while children are drowning.

We need your help to stop the rising tide of lives lost at sea.

Whatever It Takes: Our Search & Rescue Ship

Save the Children does whatever it takes for children in need – because no child deserves to drown. Join us.

With help from supporters like you, we’ve launched our first-ever Search & Rescue ship, capable of saving 300 people at a time, with a special focus on addressing the unique needs of children in their time of greatest need. We’re right now successfully saving lives at sea!

Your support will help save more lives, including:

  • Operating a search and rescue ship – based out of the Italian port of Augusta, the 194-foot vessel is fully equipped and operated by our highly experienced captain and crew, who are right now conducting daily search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea
  • Supporting a team of doctors, nurses and specialists – providing emergency medical treatment, plus emotional support and special protection for children in crisis, especially those traveling alone, unaccompanied by a parent or caregiver
  • Supplying essential provisions – including lifesaving emergency medical supplies, essential food, water, warm clothes and blankets, plus baby necessities
  • Providing ongoing support for vulnerable children – upon arriving at port and beyond, especially essential for those traveling alone, many of whom have been subject to human trafficking and various forms of abuse.

With your help, we aim to save up to 20,000 children and others at risk of drowning in the next 15 months. We’ll bring them to the nearest safe port in Italy, working closely with the Italian Coast Guard.  Then our teams in Italy, who've been working on the refugee crisis for more than eight years, will ensure vulnerable children not only arrive safely, but have ongoing protection and essential support.

Why Save the Children?

As the world’s leading, child-focused, humanitarian organization, we are uniquely equipped to save children’s lives and secure their futures. We have been working in some of the world’s toughest places for decades, and have the experience, expertise and ambition to take on new challenges to do whatever it takes to save children.

We are uniquely positioned at this moment in time. Our humanitarian experts are, right now, risking their lives at sea to save children. While we will rescue everyone who needs help, regardless of age, race or gender, our history in child-centered programming positions us to address the unique needs of children at this time and in this place. With our long-standing expertise, we know exactly what children in crisis need to survive and thrive, and with your support, we can help them realize the future they deserve.

Save the Children believes every child deserves a future. In 120 countries around the world, we work every day to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. When crisis strikes, and children are most vulnerable, we are always among the first to respond and the last to leave. We ensure children’s unique needs are met and their voices are heard. We deliver lasting results for millions of children, including those hardest to reach. We do whatever it takes for children – every day and in times of crisis – transforming their lives and the future we share.
