Short Summary
Show Me Consent is on a mission to change the way consent culture is portrayed in popular media. Too often, the topic of consent is side-stepped. This is a contest to create short viral videos (to be shared on YouTube and other platforms) to teach healthy consent behaviors, through engaging videos, slick plots, humor, surprise endings, and all the other ways that videos capture the mind. We want to inspire creators to film videos that can reach anyone, even those who would never seek out education on consent. We’ll give prizes to the best videos, and help boost their visibility. We’re asking your help to do this.
The message is simple: change the way we view and talk about consent. Change the way we interact with others. Change the world.
Who We Are
The Consent Academy is an educational collective based out of Seattle, WA. The mission we were founded on is to teach consent in all of its complexity, aspects, and potential. Our group began with some local backing and just ten volunteers, but has become a force for change.
We are committed to making consent education accessible to everyone. We believe that Consent is Essential, and that Consent is for Everyone.
What We Need & What You Get
All donations up to the $6,000 goal are being matched one-to-one by an angel backer. This means that anything you donate will be doubled!
Any money we raise goes to paying for the venue, marketing, staff, and prizes. It will also allows us to not charge a submission fee, keeping the contest accessible to a wider range of filmmakers.
The Impact
“We’ve been looking for ways to really show people what consent looks like, and to reach people who wouldn’t voluntarily seek out material on consent. Talking to some local artists, it became clear that the short film format would be a great way to highlight consensual behavior in a way people can see and not just read about. We’re especially looking for films that can spread virally to audiences who don’t normally look for consent education.” - Sar Surmick, Director.
The festival is part of the Consent Academy’s mission to build Consent Culture in communities, organizations, schools, and at home. By highlighting visual interaction we hope to bring more awareness to this topical issue.
