Non-Contact and Non-Invasive Monitoring
SleepDoc+ basically monitors the vital physiological parameters like heart rate and respiration rate of multiple people simultaneously. It uses ultra-low-power FMCW radar to wirelessly detect these vital parameters from a distance of 3-5 meters.

The science behind the innovation
Detection of vital signs is a highly promising approach for medical surveillance, emergency, and security. So, we have developed a wireless Artificial Intelligent product called SleepDoc+ which measures the Respiration rate and Heart rate which is useful for detection of diseases such as sleep apnea, snoring and Chronic Obstructive pulmonary diseases. This concept of non-contact and unobtrusive measurement of Respiration and Heart rate of humans achieved through a continuous wave Radar motion-sensing systems.
The FMCW Radar typically transmits a very low power electromagnetic signal that is perfectly safe for the human body as it has been examined under gold standards. According to the theory we track the vibrations caused due to the cardiopulmonary signal as well as the body movement.
Statistical analysis of raw data is embedded with various machine learning, Deep Learning algorithms along with the extensive use of cloud computing and IoT to make the system artificially intelligent.

When we started working on the idea of implementing a wireless smart sense system, the whole challenge of such a device was to make it portable so as to project this as a personal lifestyle device.
And the prime question to address was how to bring the entire sleep labs to the table? Is it possible to counter the traditional method of spending tens of thousands of dollars and spending the whole night in sleep labs? Is it even possible to design and implement a complete sleep solution that just not monitors sleep but also optimizes sleep quality to improve it?

With all these questions in mind, we started designing individual parts and created a mockup by encapsulating the device, component by component. But the one thing that we kept in mind was that the design shouldn’t hamper the technical efficiency of the device. And within a month, we came up with the first prototype for SleepDoc+.
Thereafter, according to the suggestions by design engineers and scholars from architecture domain, we performed several iterations to completely transform the whole design as something that can replace a table lamp. Hence, keeping the form factor standardized to maintain the compatibility of hardware was something that led to the evolution of the current design of SleepDoc+.

Source of Inspiration
The whole idea of developing a smart sleep assistant originated from an unfortunate incident where a long-route bus carrying passengers crashed into a bridge and fell into a river leading to the death of more than 90% people. The investigation later showed that it was in fact because of the drowsy driver who hadn’t slept for 2 nights straight. Sadly, my friend’s relatives were one of the victims of this incident.
And the question raised was -Was this a serious issue or just a sheer act of negligence and carelessness??
Either way, a lot of similar kind of incidents had happened in the past which had caused a huge blow to both lives as well as economy. After this incident, we felt that most of us have experienced a similar kind of situation sometimes in our lives and are lucky enough to evade that.

Laxmi Kant Tiwari being an expert in embedded systems started his research on finding out the solution for a smart sleep sense system with Dr. Aurobinda Routray, having 20+ years of experience in the domain of biomedical engineering and cognitive science in the research labs of IIT Kharagpur.
