Bringing Touchpad Controls to your Steering Wheel

Inside every SMARTwheel is advanced sensor technology that works with a proprietary algorithm to interpret the most subtle hand movements, effectively turning your steering wheel into an intelligent touchpad. SMARTwheel is programmed to track your individual driving habits, so it knows how you drive—and it uses simple, distinct gestures to let you control your vehicle and your smart devices.

Harnessing the Power of Gesture Recognition

Gesture recognition is a rapidly developing field with applications in computing, AI, gaming, and more, in which people use movement to control or interact with their devices. We wanted to bring this technology into our cars, to make driving more fun, intuitive, and safe.

We set out to develop a combination of advanced sensor technology and a proprietary algorithm to allow us to interpret subtle hand movements on the steering wheel, turning your steering wheel into a touchpad you can use to control your vehicle and smart devices!

The Magic is in the Microprocessor

We used Texas Instruments' MSP430-BT5190 for its robust microprocessing capabilities needed to run our proprietary algorithm, which lets SMARTwheel™ analyze complex hand-position data, send real-time feedback for smarter driving, and coordinate Bluetooth communication.

TJ Evarts, CEO
As the CEO of the Inventioneers® and creator of SMARTwheel™, TJ manages DFM (design for manufacturability) and product manufacturing activities. He applies his expertise in new product development to conducting research and development of current and future technologies, including market research, prototyping, and testing of proposed transportation based safety solutions. TJ also oversees strategic partnership development and investor relations.

Inventioneers® Etc., is a Londonderry, New Hampshire-based company that develops innovative technologies to solve safety challenges on the road and in homes, schools, workplaces and more. Now 19-year-old serial inventor TJ Evarts established a group of young inventors in 2004. In 2009, he began development on SMARTwheel™, the only steering wheel cover that senses hand position and provides real-time feedback to encourage safe driving habits, while using a companion smartphone app to track improvements in driving habits and deliver teachable insights. SMARTwheel™™ received an offer on the reality show Shark Tank, was pilot tested at MIT, and has been endorsed by President Barack Obama, and the former U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood.

FAQs

When will I receive my SMARTwheel™ if I contribute to this campaign?
Basic SMARTwheel™ perks will ship in June 2015. We anticipate shipping SMARTwheel™ Touch perks beginning in October-December 2015. SMARTwheel™ Genius perks are slated to begin shipping in June 2016.

What smartphone platforms are supported by the SMARTwheel™ app?
The SMARTwheel™ app is supported on all iPhone and Android phones.

I am an international contributor. Is shipping included?
Shipping is not included. Please add $30 to your contribution to cover shipping costs.

When will access to the API be available for developers?
We need your support to make the next phase of safe driving technology available. We will open our API to developers shortly after release of the SMARTwheel™.

Will SMARTwheel’s gesture controls work with any make/model car or smartphone platform?

SMARTwheel installs easily on any car, and the API is compatible with iOS and Android phones.

Did SMARTwheel™ receive funding from the investors on Shark Tank?
We were thrilled to receive an offer from the investors on ABC’s reality show Shark Tank, but following the show, we decided to move forward without the Sharks and launch SMARTwheel™ on our own. It was a tough decision, but going solo will allow us to bring SMARTwheel™ to consumers as quickly as possible.
