Short Summary
My name is Camila Noriega. I’m the writer & director of Song of the Day; my senior thesis film at Columbia College Hollywood. For the past four years I’ve been writing and directing short films and music videos. With this project, I want to take everything I’ve learned and love about filmmaking and make the best the film I can to showcase the types of movies I want to make and hopefully help launch a career as I graduate film school.
Song of the Day is a lighthearted comedy that wraps up into ten minutes a couple things that are very personal to me; music, the connection it brings between people, and how important it is to not stay stuck in the past.
The main character, Nicholas, is a reserved, music loving, know -it- all who practically lives at his job, Atomic Records. Everything about him is quite nostalgic, the way he dresses, speaks, and most importantly the music he listens to. He believes that the music nowadays, is not music at all and through a “Song of the Day” board in the store, encourages all the customers that come in to continue to listen to and appreciate his old rock favorites ;songs he deems true art. When Eileen, a lively new employee, asks to recommend her own songs for the board, Nicholas refuses. Eileen doesn’t take no for an answer and brings her own board to the shop, recommending newer-indie music. This sets off a rivalry between the two of who can sell more records based off their recommendations. As this goes on, Nicholas realizes Eileen’s love for music is just as grand as his and she may the breath of fresh air he’s been needing to open up again, he just has to figure out how to get the girl.
If I am able to make Song of the Day the way I envision it, it’ll truly be an extension of myself and represent the types of films I want to create; movies with filled with heart that entertain, hold a valuable lesson, appreciate other types art, intertwine the ideas “retro” and “modern” and are visually pleasing- because film is a visual art and I truly believe every image should be eye-candy.
