SUNDAY PUNCH is a personal story that’s taken 23 years of marriage and raising three kids to write. It’s an original, funny and heart-warming story about family and the growing pains of a relationship. If you've ever been or are currently in a meaningful union the subject matter will definitely resonate with you and act as a reminder to choose your battles wisely and when you do battle, do it with care.
SYNOPSIS
A couple's kitchen is transformed when their argument is broadcast to millions as a live sporting event on Domestic Fight TV, complete with a referee and real life TV sportscaster, Rod Black calling the play-by-play. The gloves come off, and low blows fly as the fighters are determined to leave everything on the kitchen table!
BREIF HISTORY
I went into production with an Ontario Arts Council grant, a lot of passion and generous contributions of time and services from two awesome producers, a fantastic cast, crew, suppliers and others. We've been extremely frugal and stretched the grant as far as we possibly could and we achieved great production value in return.
Our production team included Award-winning Cinematographer Pasha Patrikihttp://www.dop.ca/ Production Designer Ciara Vernon http://www.ciaravernon.com/ Picture Editor Erin Deck https://vimeo.com/user14658416 who was nominated for a CCE award this year and won best editor at LA WebFest. This is just the beginning of an incredibly talented team that delivered above-and-beyond what I thought was possible. I was lucky to have them on this project. I was also very fortunate to have some top-tier Canadian TV actors willing to join our team - check out the cast below.
As for me (the writer/director) my last short film, Across the Hall https://vimeo.com/32929376 , had a very successful run playing in festivals worldwide and garnered awards for best film in Australia, New York and Los Angeles. It was also picked up by three different distribution channels.
WHAT WE NEED
This campaign is for Post Production and festival exhibition expenses.
$6950.00 is what we're asking you to help us raise. We know this is a lot of money, but this story is set in a huge arena with a massive audience and requires the energy of that crowd to deliver the impact of the story. We evaluated every possible production scenario and found that visual effects (generously discounted from J.M Tripp Motion & Design) and excellent sound design were the most affordable way to achieve what the film needed. It was still outside what we could stretch our grant for and so, we are asking for your help.
We sought out the best deals we could from reputable suppliers and the following expenses have been discounted by 50% - 70%:
$1440 for Video Post-Production (colour correction to enhance the look and atmosphere of the arena aesthetic, as well as, an online edit to insert our VFX into the film, and packaging the film with titles and credits) *Discounted by 50% - AUG 10 - COVERED! THANK YOU!
$2260 for Sound Post-Production (Sound editing, voiceover recording for Rod Black’s play-by-play, music, foley and sound effects to deliver the arena atmosphere, and a 5.1 sound mix) *Discounted by 50% AUG 2 - THANK YOU TO ALL OUR FUNDERS. WE HAVE COVERED ALL POST SOUND EXPENSES!
$1500 for Visual Effects, Compositing and Motion Graphics (This includes crowd duplication to make the crowd larger and creating the graphics for our fictional TV channel) *Discounted by 70% JULY 5 - THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED US ACHEIVE THIS FIRST GOAL! WE HAVE NOW COVERED COSTS FOR VISUAL EFFECTS!! CHECK OUR GALLERY TAB FOR BEFORE AND AFTER CLIPS.
$570 for Festival Submissions (and that’s just the start) AUG 2 - COVERED! THANK YOU!
$700 for Festival Exhibition/Distribution Copies (includes an HD CAM, Blu-ray disc, DVD and Quicktime outputs) *No secured discount yet. AUG 2 - COVERED! THANK YOU!!
$480 for IndieGoGo and processing fees (they take a 4% commission on our donations and if we don't reach our goal, the fee is 9% (but with your help we'll reach our goal!). Another 3% also goes to IndieGoGo for credit card processing fees, and another $25 US for transfer fees due to this being a Canadian campaign. But everything else will go straight into post-production and festival submissions!
IMPACT
Let me share this vision with you: You’ve seen the film. Days, months, maybe even years down the road you and your partner are having an argument. Suddenly you hear a voice in your head. “ A beautifully played come back...” Is that...? Is that TV sportscaster Rod Black? Your angered and snarly look softens. How do you continue the argument? The next words out of your mouth are, “Do you remember that film...”.If I can interrupt your thinking for just a second with a funny memory like that then ‘ maybe you’ll think twice about why you’re arguing in the first place. That, to me, is the power of storytelling: the ability to facilitate change through creative narrative that resonates with others. I believe this film can do that. It has a universal message, and with my unique and humourous approach I think audiences around the world will respond to it and remember it.
Please feel free to pass this campaign link along to anyone who is married, has been married, thinking of getting married, living with a partner or just loves to argue whenever they get the chance. You will be doing this project an additional great service by spreading the word with your support.
Many thanks!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...so far
Q: Why can't I see the whole film?
A: We are giving access to a cut of the film for a limited time through a private link to satisfy your curiousity. After that, this is the standard anser: I would love for you to see the film, BUT without the proper sound treatment and visual effects it will definitely lose its impact. Second, if we upload the whole film at this point we would be disqualified from the major film festivals and we believe this film has the right ingredients to be a contender for festivals worldwide..
Q: What funders did you approach?
A: I submitted to Canada Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council (who gave us money! YAY!!), National Film Board of Canada and BravoFact. I take this campaign very seriously, as I greatly appreciate the magnitude of what I am asking. I hope that the faith Ontario Arts Council and my team put in me will help you feel comfortable that this is a film worth contributing to.
