In December, we'll be going to Yangon (formerly Rangoon, Burma) as volunteers to teach at Thone Htet Baka, an elementary school operated by Buddhist monks.
Most of these students are from poor families in villages with no schools; some were sent by their parents to avoid civil conflict (or being pressed as child soldiers), others are local street kids or orphans -- all are now getting a free education, a place to live, and healthcare in a warm and welcoming environment. The school even has a program to provide modest housing support for some impoverished students' families so that the student and his or her family do not have to live on the streets.
The school does an amazing job with little money and every resource is in short supply. Our goal is to make a contribution to support twenty students for one year. (Our stated IndieGoGo fundraising goal is low to save on service fees; we hope to raise much more.)
We'll be paying our own travel costs, so 100% of every contribution will help the school, its mission and, most importantly, its students.
All donations are tax deductible as permitted by law. Checks can also be mailed to our fiscal sponsor: American Friends of Prospect Burma, PO Box 257, Accord, NY 12404 (please write "School" on the memo line of your check).
