Short Summary
Kevin Folta, Chair of the Department of Horticulture at the University of Florida, has been attacked for communicating solid science that is politically controversial. Dr. Folta is a champion for farmers large and small and for the needs of hungry people around the world. As a public employee, he has made it his work to be of service to mankind. His outreach efforts include visiting thousands of students all over ranging from grade school to grad school every year. All of his work is public record and can be accessed freely.
Unfortunately, Monsanto donated $25,000 in support of his work through the University he works for. This was unfortunate because anti-GMO activists around the country used this fact to try to prove that there is a conspiracy by Monsanto to manipulate science. To that end, Dr. Folta was smeared in press and on social media. In order to eliminate the distraction which could have caused his work to suffer further, the grant which was initially to be used for his science education and outreach efforts was reallocated to the campus food bank.
When public scientists are attacked for political gain, we all lose. Let's stand up for science and replace the money that should have gone to benefit the budding next generation of scientists.
