You
Can Prevent the Spread of Ebola & Support Liberia’s Most Vulnerable Population
“The prison population is engulfed with grave fear
that one of their friend inmates could be affected with Ebola and the entire
population may suffer greatly from the outbreak.”
-
Reverend Francis
Kollie, Executive Director of Prison Fellowship Liberia.
With
the rapid spread of the deadly Ebola virus in Liberia,
the country’s most vulnerable population, the prisoners in the Monrovia Central
Prison (MCP) and surrounding regional prisons, are in very serious danger of
contracting the virus. Over 86% of these
men and women have yet to be charged with a crime and may even be innocent!
Liberia lacks the means to hold speedy and efficient trials, and pre-trial
detainees are forced to endure abhorrent conditions. “Liberia’s prisons are so
poor that they violate basic human rights. Prison inmates are crowded into
dark, dirty cells without adequate food, sanitation or health care.”1
The prisons do not have the capacity to
contain the Ebola virus if it enters,
and the death toll would be enormous. Therefore, the only real preventative
measure that we can take at this time is to supply the prisons with infrared
temperature testing equipment to stop Ebola-infected individuals from
entering the facilities.
In
early August, we sent $2,000 in Emergency
Funds to Prison Fellowship Liberia for the purchase of preventative hygienic
materials to ensure the safety and security of the inmates in the
most densely populated prisons across Liberia – these funds were not nearly
enough!
We now turn to you to match this $2,000
and double our support to PFL by the end of September.
With your generous support in meeting our goal of $2,000, PFL
will purchase the following essential and scarce items for the Monrovia
Central Prison and surrounding regional prisons:
·
Temperature Testing Equipment, 24
pcs
·
Protective Gloves and Masks, 5,000
pcs
·
Buckets, 250 pcs
·
Barrels, 100 pcs
·
Hand Sanitizers, 150

·
