Short Summary
Last year I asked my students in the Rancho Cotate High School Woodshop program,"What would you have liked to do differently this year?" And their response was to build projects for the community. I contacted several local organizations and found one that was providing housing and counceling services to local homeless youth 18 to 24 years old. They are converting an old hospital into a new facility to serve this population. I asked them what could we build for them and they told me, "We need a piece of furniture in each of our 60 rooms to hold the clothes and personal possessions of the residents." In bringing this project to my students they decided that they would love to work on this project and that we should fundraise for the cost of materials so we could give all 60 Armoires to the new facility. Please help us!
What We Need & What You Get
We need $6,000 dollars to buy the materials necessary to complete the Teens Building For Teens Armoire Project!
- This funding will go directly to materials to build the armoires
- With a $60.00 or more contribution we will send you a beautiful student built cutting board!
- If we do not reach our end goal any funds we do receive will go to building as many armoires as we can with the donations that are received.
The Impact
This new transitional housing center will provide counseling services, job training and placement, continuing education, and other services to allow these youth to successfully transition into being productive adults. Because 65% of youth leaving foster care homes in Sonoma County each year become homeless, it is important to provide more services than housing to support these youth into adulthood. The armoires we will build will be part of the room furniture in this very "supportive community" of young men and women as they learn to live together as adults. We want to build and provide a beautiful piece of furniture for each resident to make their new room feel more like home.
- Risks & Challenges
- Whereas this would be a small furniture project for a company, this is a big deal for a high school wood shop. Our classes are only one hour per day and we have a deadline to produce an armoire for each new resident as the facility remodels the old hospital. 20 armoires are needed by the end of Jan. 2016. We are going to work after school, on weekends, and during winter break to make this deadline. I want to teach my students that quality building and deadlines are important. We know these armoires will be used for decades to come.
- Any funds we receive over the amount of materials will be used to provide student scholarships, shop improvements and build future community projects.
