Our Story - Round 2

Since we started this campaign in the summer, we have raised nearly $1,000 toward our $15,000 goal. In order to provide twelve buses for transportation to and from locations throughout NYC and Westchester County for our guests, we MUST push to raise more funds! This dinner has a very valued history among the street people of metro New York and they embrace the event as if we were all family. We are! Please help us now to reach our goal! ~ Jeanne Newman, founder, SHARE the Project, Inc.

S.H.A.R.E. the Project, Inc. was created in 1988 by Jeanne Newman while she was a high school teacher at a public school in Westchester, NY.  The group's goal is to involve high school students and youth in community service.  In the 23 years since its birth, S.H.A.R.E. has helped guide students toward a clearer understanding of the social responsibilities required to ensure a brighter tomorrow for everyone.  By transforming community service into social activism and by changing the idea of service from "requirement" to "choice", we lay the foundation for a culture and a society that is richer in understanding and acceptance of the disenfranchised, the disempowered and the poor.  Along with many other service choices, including a partnership with the Midnight Run, Inc., a group that delivers food, clothing, and kindness to New York City's homeless, S.H.A.R.E. hosts an annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the Homeless, which serves a delicious, nourishing Thanksgiving Dinner to over 500 men, women, and children from the five boroughs and Westchester.  The dinner is run by student volunteers from local high schools, who help to cook, set up, decorate, serve, and clean up.  The 300+ students who volunteer each year come away from the experience with a deep understanding of what it is to serve, and for many students, S.H.A.R.E. inspires them to continue a lifetime of community outreach.  For its 500 guests, the dinner provides a comfortable, joyful night that shows them that although times are difficult, there are people who care.

The Impact

For over 20 years, more than 500 men, women and children from all five boroughs of New York City and Westchester County each year, have attended this holiday event. Volunteers and guests who have been part of the dinner have built meaningful relationships that could not have developed under any other circumstances, and Jeanne is proof that these friendships can last years.  The dinner has even had a few guests who, after finding a home and getting back on their feet, continue to return year after year because the event holds a special place in their hearts. Often they ask to volunteer themselves, thus creating a completed circle for many of them. For people in difficult situations and without much to look forward to, the dinner brings excitement, happiness, and hope.

What We Need & What You Get

S.H.A.R.E. provides enough food to ensure that 500 people will leave the dinner feeling full.  We pride ourselves on not just providing a home-cooked holiday meal, but  providing an enjoyable experience that includes entertainment for our littlest guests, basketball between courses, and stuffed animals to bring with them back to wherever they call home. We work hard to make our venue look beautiful with decorations that volunteers have joyfully created.

Our major expense is providing transportation.  The annual event is held in Westchester County, and S.H.A.R.E. provides bus transportation to bring all of its guests to the dinner and then back into New York City and various locations within Westchester County as well.

We rely on donations (cash and in-kind) to cover most of our food, decorations, and transportation.  It costs thousands of dollars in order to run each dinner smoothly.  S.H.A.R.E., like so many small not-for-profits currently does not have enough funding  to guarantee that the dinner can continue year after year.  We hope, through Indiegogo, to raise enough money to cover the cost of our next dinner.  If we truly do not have enough money for a dinner, any funds we do recieve from donors will be put into S.H.A.R.E.'s other projects, such as the Midnight Run, Project Prom, Crossing Borders and inter-school tutoring, so it will be put to very good use. SHARE the Project, Inc. is a recognized not-for-profit organization and tax exempt.

Be a "friend of S.H.A.R.E." (donate $25 or more) and we will send you a S.H.A.R.E. coffee mug!
