Overview
I am a descendant of the Acadian People (Leblanc) and am making a documentary film about The Acadians and "Le Grand Dérangement." I am going to the Congrés Mondial Acadien in Maritime Canada this August 10 thru 24 to shoot footage for my film, possibly record interviews and make connections with future interview subjects. The money will fund airfare, rental car, gas, food and incidentals for the trip. Any surplus will fund future production and finishing costs. Thanks for anything you can give!

Short Summary

My name is Elizabeth Covert, and I am a descendant of The Acadian People of Maritime Canada who were deported from their lands by the British from 1755 to 1769 during what is known today as Le Grand Dérangement. I am also an aspiring documentary film maker and am currently producing a documentary about The Acadians and Le Grand Dérangement.

Theirs is a story of triumph, tragedy, and rebirth. However, in many ways, The Acadian People are still impacted by what happened to their ancestors over 260 years ago.

I feel it's important to tell this story to as wide an audience as possible, given the recent rise of anti-immigrant sentiment and demonization of the "other" in the United States and around the world. When I am asked what my film is about and respond The Acadians, more often than not I get a blank stare. That's how I know this story needs to be told and I'm passionate about getting this film made.

What We Need & What You Get

I am planning a production trip to the Congrés Mondial Acadien in Maritime Canada this August 10 thru 24. The Congrés only happens every 5 years and it is not always in Maritime Canada. It's imperative that I make it to the Congrés next month.

I am trying to raise $3000 to fund the trip. The money will fund airfare, rental car, gas, food and incidentals. I will shoot background footage for my film, possibly record interviews and make connections with future interview subjects.

Everyone who donates will get their name in the credits and on the website. If you are of Acadian descent, please include your Acadian family name and you will be listed on a page showing your name under your ancestors' name. And it will be large type, slow-moving graphics at the beginning of the credits so everyone will be able to read their name!

Any surplus will fund future administrative, production and finishing costs.

The Impact

"Soldiers rounding up terrified civilians, expelling them from their land, burning their homes and crops ‒ it sounds like a 20th-century nightmare in one of the world's trouble spots, but it describes a scene from Canada's early history, the Deportation of the Acadians."

~ Excerpt from "The Deportation of the Acadians," The Canadian Encyclopedia

In 1604, 16 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, a small group of settlers from France came to present-day Nova Scotia, a land that was then called "Acadie" in French or "Acadia" in English.

Against tremendous odds, battling hunger and disease, and with little support from France, The Acadians, as they came to call themselves, not only survived the first few years in their new home, they thrived. In partnership with the indigenous Mi'kmaq and Maliseet peoples, The Acadians built a vibrant colony in their new home.

In the early 1700's the British took control of Acadia and for a time, the Acadian people lived in relative peace with the British. However, in 1755 British officials began a systematic deportation of the Acadian people in order to claim their lands for British settlers from the American colonies.

Now more than ever, I feel the need to tell the my ancestors' story, not just as a historical record, but also a personal journey and as an allegory those who still today try to solve their own social ills by demonizing and persecuting those who are different than they are.

Other Ways You Can Help

Even if you can't contribute money, there are other ways to help!

Please share this with any of your friends and family who you feel will want to contribute to my campaign. The more people who share, the greater chance my campaign will get more visibility and help me reach my goal faster.

If you go to the campaign page, you can use the indiegogo share tools to help boost my visibility.

If you're going to the Congrés, I would appreciate your suggestions of the best places to get footage and maybe be able to do "man-on-th-street" interviews.

Please contact me through my website, beltanefilms.com or follow my facebook page @beltanefilms and I will keep you updated on my progress with the campaign and when I get to the Congrés, I will be doing daily updates during my trip.
