Today we launch a crowdfunding campaign to not only fund a movie, but to tell an incredible story of human resilience and fortitude in the face of extreme adversity. While continuing to lay the foundation to tell many more important Caribbean stories through cinema.

Have you ever seen a mainstream, feature length Caribbean film? No? Maybe? Pirates of the Caribbean and Cool Runnings don’t count! The fact is that there are many wonderful films made by Caribbean filmmakers that the world hasn't seen, instead the world has been shown the Caribbean as a backdrop in Hollywood films and in the brochures of 5-Star resorts. This is all well and fine. However, within the region there are a thousand islands and a million stories just waiting to be told. Stories that are rich in folklore, history and culture.

With this campaign we hope to not only fund our first feature film, The Cutlass. We intend to lay the foundation, so that we may continue to tell genuine, authentic Caribbean stories for years to come.

About The Cutlass...

Based on true events, The Cutlass tells the story of a young woman who uses her intelligence, strength and faith to endure and survive abduction. This story not only explores her depth of character, but delves into the mind of her abductor, revealing the unfortunate and hopeless influence that broken families face; cycles of abuse, class divides and socioeconomic pressures faced by far too many people in the developing world.

The Team Behind The Cutlass...

The production team behind the The Cutlass is a talented group of Caribbean and American filmmakers that have been diligently working for years, to develop this story into a quality feature film. It began when actress/writer Teneille Newallo approached producer/director Darisha Beresford with an incredible true story about strength and faith in the most dire of circumstances. Since then, the team has grown to include Trinidadian producer Luke Paddington, American cinematographer Ian Bloom, editor Drew Umland and sound designer Dominic Zunino. Together, the team produced a 12 minute short-film version of The Cutlass, which premiered at film festivals in the US and Caribbean.

Current members and key contributors to the project include Brent Webster, Juliette McCawley and Oliver Milne, to name a few.

A Five Year Process...

After years of writing, re-writing and development, the producers of The Cutlass are ready to portray this story as a feature length film! The team is confident that The Cutlass has a place among the finest of international films and the potential to put the region on the map, for mainstream independent film. We truly believe that this campaign is for more than us; more than this film. It is for the region, all of its filmmakers, the diaspora and all of those who love and/or are intrigued by the Caribbean. However, we are relying on you to move us forward.

Over the past few years we have had some incredible support from friends, family, sponsors and grant-givers.  (Thank you!) All of these have helped us keep the project alive and develop it to this point. However, the reality is that producing a feature length film costs money. To ensure that this film lives up to its potential, we need the best possible quality elements for planning on set and during post-production. From film equipment to props, providing meals to requiring on-set insurance, the endeavor is expensive. And that is why we need your help to make this a reality. Let us show the world that we, as the Caribbean, do not need to rely on Hollywood to tell our stories! We can achieve greatness with the power of community and fan support. With your help, we can tell an amazing Caribbean story. One of the many that deserve to be told.

Doubling Up with Fund Matching

Not only will every dollar raised go directly and immediately into the production of this film, we have an investor willing to match the funds we raise on Indiegogo, of up to $100,000! This match will help cover the production costs and allow us to shoot as early as January 2016.

So please take the time review the many opportunities that you have by supporting this project. More importantly, please help spread the word of this campaign to all of your friends and family! Email, share, tweet, etc. Let’s get as many people involved as we can. We have faith that there is an audience that wants to see this movie, as much as we want to tell it!

Thank you so much for your consideration and support.
