I am Producer/Director John A. Brickley. I have teamed up with Rankin/Bass Historian-Biographer Rick Goldschmidt to finally create a Documentary on the never before told history of Rankin/Bass Productions!

If you are not already familiar with Rankin/Bass Productions, they have no doubt been responsible for some of your favorite holiday programing, and most likely been a part of one production or another that you grew up with. Rankin/Bass produced everything from holiday specials to cartoon shows, from feature dramas to cult horror. Rankin/Bass is a pivotal influence to American and World Culture. Their works have influenced generations of filmmakers and industry, authors and artists, as well as most of us to some degree or another.

Their best known work is the 1964 holiday favorite “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer” which still airs every year, and has now been viewed by over ONE-BILLION people worldwide. Other notable Rankin/Bass feature favorites include 1969’s “Frosty the Snowman” 1974’s “The Year Without A Santa Claus”, 1970’s “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”, 1979’s “Jack Frost”, and 1967’s “Mad Monster Party?”.  Rankin/Bass also produced many of the 1960’s, 70’s & 80’s favorite cartoon shows, including ThunderCats, SilverHawks, The Smokey Bear Show, The Jackson 5ive cartoon series, TigerSharks, and many, many more!  

This Documentary is long overdue, and has been years in the making. We have mountains of information, and every contact imaginable with all the Rankin/Bass affiliates. However, most of the surviving members who are still around are getting up there in years. Arthur Rankin Jr. recently passed away, and we desperately need to get the stories from everyone else while there is still time. In order to start production on this ASAP, we have to fund the Documentary ourselves.

In order to make this all possible, we need to raise at least  $250,000 in the next 60 days in order to get to work this summer. 

We have dozens of works to cover in this Documentary, and will shoot in some amazing locations, such as Arthur Rankin Jr.’s estate in Bermuda where his personal collection is stored, as well as visit some key Rankin/Bass players and facilities in Japan. We also need a significant amount of funds to license clips, media, etc. from all of these great productions to include in the film. The more we raise, the more amazing stuff we can put in the Documentary! 

The more people who contribute to help make the Documentary, the better our chances of getting wider distribution!

The goal of this campaign is to make the best Documentary possible on the history of Rankin/Bass. We want to make the film all of you have been waiting for, and to preserve Rankin/Bass Productions in the annals of film.

In order to raise the funds needed to make this film, Rick and I have reached out to some amazing artists, and they have in turn been exceedingly generous in their support for this project. We have also come up with a lot of other perks to make it worth you while! 

We believe that if you help us make the Documentary now, you should not have to pay to see it when it comes out. Your contributions now will not just go into someone’s pocket as a profit, those funds make the movie. Most of our perk packages give you either a Digital Download, DVD, or both!

Q. How will you know where to send my perks? What happens if I move before you send out the perks? How do I change my address? 

A. When you make your contribution, you will be asked for your shipping address. We will ship everything to you at the address given unless we hear from you otherwise. If you need to change your address, please send us a message with with which perk package you ordered and the name you ordered it under, along with original address and the new address you would like it sent to, and we will send you a confirmation e-mail. Messages should be sent to rankinbassdoc@gmail.com with “PERK DETAILS” in the subject line. If you send us a message, we will get it, but please be patient as it may take us a little while to get back to you.

Q. When will I get my perks?

A. Digital Downloads and DVD's will ship upon the films release date, if we can get it to you before it comes out, we will. All other materials will ship on schedule.

Q. What happens if I give you money for these perks, and you don’t reach your goal, or the movie never gets made?

A. If we don’t reach our $250,000 goal, we will still move forward with making as much of the film as we can, and will at a later point launch another crowdsourcing campaign to raise whatever funds we would still need to complete the Documentary if we do not secure funding elsewhere by that time. However, if some act of god keeps us from making the movie, we will still send you any perks that we’re able to produce. (And then they'll be genuine collectibles!) For perks that we couldn’t produce on our own, such as the Premiere and After-Party, Digital Downloads, or DVDs, we would issue you a partial refund for the part of your contribution that would have paid for the perk. 

Q. What if I want more than one perk package (or standalone perk)? 

A. You can make multiple pledges on Indiegogo using a single account. Just make sure you use the same email address and login, so we’ll know that all of your perks are meant to go to the same place.

Q. How will I get my DIGITAL DOWNLOAD perk? 

A. We’re still working out the specifics, but we’ll do our best to make it available on major platforms -- iTunes, Amazon, Google, whatever we can get it on. Outside of the United States, the options might be different. We’ll keep you posted. 

Q. How will you know what size T- SHIRT/HOODIE to send me? 

A. When the campaign is over, we will contact contributors with Tee Shirt/Hoodie size requests, your perk preferences, and any other details we need. When we do, you'll tell us what size you want, and we'll answer any questions you have.

Producer/Director John A. Brickley is a graduate of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where he earned his BFA in Motion Picture and Television Production. He has continued to work on various projects as a filmmaker, with notable accolades including having worked with filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola, as well as on another feature documentary which premiered as an Official Selection of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize: Documentary.

Executive Producer Rick Goldschmidt is the Historian/Biographer and foremost authority on Rankin/Bass Productions. He has written four books on Rankin-Bass and their works. In addition to his publications, he has been a part of many Rankin-Bass related projects, as well as countless TV and radio interviews over the last 25 years covering their works. Rick is often sought out by studios, distributors, museums, galleries, etc. whenever someone needs an expert to consult on anything Rankin/Bass. 

As we started out, but to drive the point home, Rankin/Bass is a pivotal influence to American and World Culture. Their works have influenced generations of filmmakers and industry, authors and artists, as well as most of us to some degree or another.

The story of how Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass came together to form a small company called Videocraft International which later became Rankin/Bass Productions is one that has never been told. Most people are unaware of the extent of the Rankin/Bass catalog, and how far their influence reached amongst fans, families, artists, industries, and across the world.

Only our team, with a proven record in the film industry and an unquestioned expertise on the subject, can bring the Documentary that deserves to be made to the world. And it is only by your contributions and your help that this Documentary can be made, and the Rankin/Bass story can be told.
