Story of My Book

The Entrepreneurial Learning Journey – and Back Again

Have you ever wondered why the entrepreneurial classroom seems so different from a more traditional classroom? Perhaps you are an educator, or you are one of the students who signed up for an entrepreneurial class. Whatever your situation, if you are driven by a constant curiosity about entrepreneurship in the classroom, then this book is for you.

My name is Birgitte Wraae, and I wrote this book because I am driven by a curiosity to find what makes entrepreneurship so special to teach. Students are leaving our classroom feeling more changed and more aware of their own skills and competencies than ever before — and no doubt, that is special.

This book explores the world of entrepreneurship education, more specifically the journey we are asking our students to take. I call it a hero’s journey because the students enter the classroom expecting more of the same, but instead, they get a call to action – to explore and return with something that creates value for someone.

My hope is to instill in you the same passion for entrepreneurship that I have. I want you to see this book as a guide to understand the possibilities that entrepreneurship offers and use them on your own learning journey, whatever that may be.

In this book you will be taken on the entrepreneurial learning journey. It is an inspirational book based on my own experiences and conversations with experienced entrepreneurship educators around the world, you will learn about:

The importance of setting the scene and getting to know your students

Insights from experienced educators on the why, the how and the what of teaching entrepreneurship

The challenges students are facing

The role of the entrepreneurship educator

Personal reflections from students

What’s next for students returning to their own world

The Entrepreneurial Learning Journey – and Back Again is a nonfiction book. You will love this book if you love to teach, no matter the subject you are teaching, and are a curious educator on your own learning path. You will also enjoy it if you are a student entrepreneur wanting to understand the process, or if you are working within education and want to understand the possibilities that entrepreneurship offers.

The Book - The Entrepreneurial Learning Journey - and Back Again

The book is written in six parts.

Part 1 contains the first two chapters where I explore the purpose of entrepreneurship education and the personal development that is a part of the purpose.

Part 2 contains chapters 3-5, where we meet the students in the known world of education. It discusses the importance of getting to know the students and the concept of entrepreneurial learning.

Part 3 contains chapters 6-9 that zooms into the unknown world of entrepreneurship. I start with introducing the general understanding of entrepreneurship and move on to discuss which entrepreneurial competencies are needed, and how to foster a growth mindset. It is also here the students meet the abyss in the form of the emotional roller coaster.

Part 4 contains chapters 10-11, and focuses on the role of the entrepreneurship educator. Being an educator means taking on different roles to assist the students in reaching their goals.

Part 5 contains chapters 12-14 and forms a discussion around how we assess the students when they have reached the goal set for the course. The entrepreneurial learning journey also includes a change in the students’ mindset and their identity. How do we measure that?

Part 6 closes the journey with chapters 15-17 that discuss overall themes with entrepreneurship education including the dark sides as well as the future of the field.

All parts include personal reflections from students who have participated in an entrepreneurial course or programme.

About the Author

Birgitte Wraae holds a Ph.D. in entrepreneurship education. She is working as an Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship at UCL University College Denmark, in Denmark. Her research interests are in entrepreneurship, especially entrepreneurship education: the role of the entrepreneurship educator, identity formation, emancipation, and reflection. It is her firm belief that everyone would benefit from participating in the entrepreneurial learning journey. Her book opens the door into how an experienced entrepreneurship educator views that journey.

Risks & Challenges

The biggest challenge with publishing a book is delivering the finished book to the backer, specifically my mailing of the book to you. I have eliminated this risk by building into the campaign the mailing and shipping costs of your signed copies to you within each pre-order tier.

The risk of delivering the pre-sale copies of my book is contingent on the publisher we use. I will be working closely with New Degree Press to make sure we get the earliest possible ship date of the signed book copy to you. We will keep all pre-sale backers up-to-date as my book hits each key milestone and publishes. You will know when the copies are expected to ship.

Other Ways You Can Help

Not everyone can support, but that doesn't mean you can't get something out of it!
I will reward the top 3 people who refer the most backers at the end of the campaign (30 days).

Here's how:

At the top of the campaign page, you will see the "share" buttons. Click on the "chain" icon to get a custom link just for you. (Note: don't use the URL in the browser window as it won't work to track referrals and you won't get credit ?)

Copy that link and paste it on your social media, email it to a friend, or text a fellow book lover.

When someone clicks on that link and backs the book, you get 1 entry!

Please use #EntrepreneurialLearningJourney and tag me as well as my publisher, New Degree Press, so we can help amplify your efforts!
