Overview
Orthodox Christians are already feeling the effects of climate change. In Alaska, in Greece, in California, in New York, parishioners are bearing witness to melting permafrost, floods, wildfires and hurricanes marking our global challenge. This documentary gives voice to hierarchs, clergy and laity on our place in the natural world, climate change, theologies of creation and hope in the beautiful design of God's creation and the ascetic acts of stewardship in which our faithful are now engaged.

About:

  • This film is being produced by The Orthodox Fellowship of the Transfiguration, which has been proclaiming the ecological mission of the Orthodox Church for 20 years.
  • The Face of God bears witness to a critical issue at a critical time (more about the project here).
  • All contributions will pay for travel expenses and editing fees -- and allow the team to continue to gather stories from a wide and representative swath of Orthodox Christians both in the US and around the world.
  • A 60 minute, 30 minute, and a 5 minute version of The Face of God will be realized.

What We Need

  • We are asking for 50k USD to expand this film's reach and impact.
  • This will go toward 1) Location filming. 2) Editing and sound engineering. 3) Distribution.
  • If we don't reach our entire goal, the funds will go to editing and distribution.

The Impact

  • This film takes an intimate look at what His All Holiness, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, has called the defining problem of our time. With only a decade left to radically decrease our emissions (and effectively change every aspect of our lives), it's an urgent call back to stewardship and prayer.
  • This is a film about beauty, ecology, theology, sanctity and our relationship to the natural world. Always, it is about the radiant living icon of the face of God in creation. As such, it is unprecedented and deeply necessary (see more below).

More about the film

The Face of God is a film about God and nature, faith and climate change, the experience of Orthodox communities around the world facing and experiencing changes in their lives now; this is a film about beauty, ecology, theology, sanctity, our relationship to the natural world, love, asceticism, and always it is about the radiant living icon of the face of God in creation. We are showcasing our most important Church voices, highest ranking hierarchs, scientists, politicians, lay leaders, theologians, and communities around the world, and gathering the witness of the whole church on the defining issue of our time.

Produced by The Orthodox Fellowship of the Transfiguration, and written and directed by Fr Kaleeg Hainsworth, the Face of God will be released world-wide on September 1st, 2019. Join us here for footage, news, interviews, and to follow the global journey of this film through the wealth, beauty, and transformative power of our Church’s witness to nature, climate change, and ecological stewardship. We are making this film with love, prayer, personal sacrifice, and with integrity. We would all dearly love your support and prayer.
