The Film

The Green Couch Project, is a feature length documentary that follows Non-Profit organizations and NGO's to the rural villages of Sierra Leone in Africa as they rebuild the lives of the people still struggling from the effects of a war that ended over a decade ago.

After a very bloody cilvil war from 1992-2002, Sierra Leonians were finally able to begin to see their future again.  For many villages outside of the the capital city of Freetown, the future looked further away than ever before.  Thousands of bodies littered the ground and unidentified family members were left to mass graves.  Schools, bakeries, and health clinics were but but a few bricks on the ground.  Children forced to commit murders as soldiers, and who were subjected to copious amounts of drugs and power would never be the same innocent children they once were.  Farm fields were littered with mines and bones. Water wells collapsed and potable drinking water was scarce and dangerous.  The people of these villages lived through unthinkable acts of violence and still they find a way to persevere, to look forward and move on.

Amazingly, over ten years later, little has changed for these villages.  This is where "our" story begins. Many people left Sierra Leone during what most know as the "Blood Diamond War."  Now, some of them are returning to make it a better place for those who call it home.

So What's with The Green Couch

The Green Couch is a state of mind, a way of thinking. It was started by the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection youth group from Racine, WI when they took a trip to San Antonio Texas in 2006 for the ELCA Youth Gathering. The eye opening and inspiring days there always concluded with heart felt coversations about life and self. These conversations always began at a meeting place which just so happened to be... a Green Couch in the lobby of the hotel. 3 years later, that same group went to New Orleans to help clean up the the still very damaged city at The Gathering. When they walked into the hotel lobby, they were greeted by a green couch. From that point on, the green couch has been an imaginary place where you could go to open up so someone, to discover who you are as a peson and as a whole. It is a journey through life that makes you the person you are.

One goal as a film maker in documentary work is to find something along the way that inspires and hopefully changes you. This is my Green Couch journey.

The Impact

When we are sitting at home watching the televison  we think we have the world at our figertips. But, once the cameras are off and the news reporters tell us everything is fine, that's when we have to open our eyes. This film will effect many people on many levels. It will effect you, the viewer as we show you a different side of life. All of the sudden you realize that this world still much bigger than anyone could ever imagine. It will also affect the people of Sierra Leone and will hopefully bring new interest to people willing to make a change.

What We Need and What We Plan To Do

We know our goals are big, but we are confident that we can make this happen with your help!!!

For this project we have teamed up with an amazing organization in Providence RI  and Seirra Leone called "Khadarlis for Sierra Leone" a 501c3 non profit. www.khadarlis.org.  Without their help and support this film would not be able to take flight.  Our chief goal for completing this film is $100,000. But we are focused on raising $50,000 for the first major part of the production which includes a  trip to Sierra Leone for a month or longer. We would like to help make Sierra Leone a better place as we film this movie so we have pledged half of what we raise to help Khadarlis with their mission.  For this trip our focus will be on Khadarlis as their cofounders Darlis Johnson and Aisha Khadar Desince take us to the Bo district, Bargbo chiefdom, Jimmi, Senehun, Bandajuma and Kpawama where they are building mud huts, libraries, schools, sustainable agriculture, health care and water wells. We will explore the programs put in place to renew sustainable farming and education and see the difference a few people can have on the world. Because, if a few people can make an impact...think about how much we can shake the ground with everyone who sees this film.

The plan is to get this film to as many people as possible. We would like to see it at festivals and on television. One of our major goals is to attract the attention of the ELCA youth convention and get our message out to the active youth of America.

All of this within 1 year!!!!!
