Introduction

Hello everyone!

We are very happy to share with you our new project, "The Men Who Wait". This film is produced by Le Fresnoy-National Studio of Contemporary Arts in France and directed by Truong Minh Quy. Even though this is a short film, about 15 minutes, the making process will not be less challenging as this time we would like to work completely with the medium of 16mm from shooting to editing and projecting.

Encountering the difficulties from the lack of infrastructure for 16mm film, hence the increasing budget, we have together joined to enforce our strength in order to make the film possible: John Badalu, who has vast experiences in programming films for A-list festivals and producing films, especially those about LGBTQ, has come on board as a co-producer; Son Doan, a close friend and talented director of photography; Gerald Thomas and Jean Francois our lovely actors; and of course the great support from one of the most leading art institutions in France, Le Fresnoy.

As some of you would already know about the previous films of Truong Minh Quy, he always tries to reach different artistic challenges in each film he has made. If his first feature film is the mix of autobiography and sci-fi elements, then the last one is an essay documentary, shot on super 16mm, about the question of being homeless in Vietnam; with this one, The Men Who Wait, he wants to totally use the analog techniques to express something poignantly beautiful about the love of the elderly people, which has become so rare in cinema today. 

From 2019 to 2021, Quý will work and experience at Le Fresnoy studio where his two artworks will be produced in the course of 2 years. "The Men Who Wait" is the first work to be made, with the ambition of making a film on fully analog 16mm. 

We are ready to start the shooting, but we will only be able to finish the film with your generous and precious support!

Synopsis

In a forest nearby highways somewhere in France, there are men waiting among the trees in the silence of natural sound and light. Each man waits for another man to come. The gazes that look through the leaves, searching for any moving bodies. The male bodies follow each other through the trees to find a place to settle down. They undress their clothes. In the performance of a restrained desire, their bodies find the way to meet. In contact with each other those men suddenly become so vulnerable, their skin so soft, their hands so warm, their faces so childish. It seems they can burst into tears at any time. As soon as they dress up again, they leave without knowing each other’s names, without remembering each other’s faces. They will never meet again.

About the film

This film is about homosexuality, but not in mainstream terms. We don’t want to step over again on the narrow trail that most of the gay movies do: hot fit guys, sunny beaches, techno music, dramatic endings, etc. This film’s characters are the ordinary men who can be seen easily in this real life: in coal mines, in train stations, in orange farms, on streets, etc. They are not young and don’t have ‘hot’ bodies. Their bodies bare the traces of old age, of hard labour, of a life that is not free, of a hidden rebel, of a constant loneliness. They are tender to every touch because they have longed so much for each other, like what it says in Jaques Brel's 'La chanson des vieux amants' (The Song of Old Lovers). It is very important for the film to reveal the vulnerability of the human relationship as such.

In this film, we will work with the unprofessional actors as what we are looking for is the appearances with the real-life experiences. Please have a look at the rehearsal video of the two main actors, Jean Francois and Gerald, in which they improvised their dialogue and revealed their spontaneous chemistry:

The finished film will be projected from the 16mm print with the optical soundtrack (and of course the digital version as well, for the practical reason). Nowadays almost nobody makes films, especially short films, in this way anymore. This beauty of cinematic medium has been mostly faded out, indeed it has become the past. With this film, we would like to capture again such a fragile beauty for the contemporary audience. The making will be a complex handwork process as most of the infrastructure has disappeared. Yet for the short moment of beauty, it’s worthy of trying! And we absolutely need your help! 

The Location

The film will be shot in North of France at one location: the slag heap ('terril' in French). The ground made from the wastes of coal mining is dark, bold and strong that creates a strong visual for the film. This location is also linked to the history of the mining industry in the past, that metaphorically relates to the film story. 

Timeline

We plan to shoot the film at the end of March 2020 when the spring is on its way.

The editing and post-production would take around 2 months.

The completed film will be ready by August 2020.

About the filmmakers 

Truong Minh Quy, Director

Trương Minh Quý is born in Buon Ma Thuot, a small city in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. In 2010 he quit the Ho Chi Minh City College of Cinema and Theatre in his 2nd year to follow independent filmmaking. Quý lives and works here and there in the vibrancy of memories and present moments, his narratives and images, lying between documentary and fiction, personal and impersonal, draw on the landscape of his homeland, childhood memories, and the historical context of Vietnam. 

His films have been selected for international film festivals and exhibitions such as Rotterdam, Clermont-Ferrand, Oberhausen, Busan, Les Rencontres Internationales Paris&Berlin. He is the alumnus of 2012 AFA (Asian Film Academy, Busan International Film Festival) and 2016 Berlinale Talents (Berlin International Film Festival).  He is one of the winners for the main Art Prize at the 20th VideoBrasil, Sao Paulo in 2017. His last feature film, The Tree House, has been in the competition in the 72nd Locarno Film Festival, and screened in New York Film Festival and Viennale amongst others.

Le Fresnoy, National Studio of Contemporary Arts In France (Producer)

Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains sets up new kind of higher artistic teaching establishment in the North of France, an innovative, world-class creative hub that would be like “an IRCAM of the visual arts” or “a hi-tech Villa Medici". Each year Le Fresnoy produces about 24 works in various disciplines such as cinema, photography, installation, new media for young artists from all around the world. Its exhibition of the completed works reflects the true spirit of learning, daring and experimenting. 

John Badalu (Co-producer)

John Badalu has been working in the film industry for 20 years. He studied Economics majoring Marketing Management before taking New Media Studies for the post-graduate study at DAMS University in Bologna, Italy. He is one of the founders of Q! Film Festival in Indonesia, the biggest LGBT Film Festival in the predominantly Muslim country. Badalu was chosen as one of the Ashoka Foundation Scholarship Recipients as one of the Changemakers for his tireless activism on LGBT rights through the film festival. Badalu worked as a Festival Delegate and Programmer for A-List Film Festival like Berlin, Shanghai and Tallinn International Film Festival between 2011 to 2019. He now works for QCinema Film Festival (Philippines) as the Main Programmer. He is also an independent producer with 2 short films and 5 feature films that have premiered in Sundance, Locarno, Rotterdam and Busan among others. 

Son Doan (Director of Photography)

Son Doan works as director of photography for various projects ranged from short to feature, celluloid to digital. He has been collaborating with Truong Minh Quy in Quy's last feature documentary film, The Tree House (Locarno and New York Film Festival). His other films include Sofia, directed by Meryem BenM’Barek (* Best script Cannes, un certain regard, 2018); Doubbleplus Ungood, directed by Marco Laguna, 2018; etc.

Giới Thiệu

Xin chào mọi người!

Chúng tôi rất vui mừng khi được chia sẻ với các bạn dự án mới, “Những Người Chờ Đợi”. Đây là một phim được sản xuất bởi Le Fresnoy-Studio Nghệ Thuật Đương Đại Quốc Gia Pháp, đạo diễn bởi Trương Minh Quý. Mặc dù đây chỉ là một phim ngắn, tầm 15 phút, nhưng không vì thế mà quá trình sản xuất sẽ kém thử thách đi, vì lần này chúng tôi muốn làm việc hoàn toàn với chất liệu 16mm từ lúc quay cho đến dựng phim và trình chiếu.

Đối diện với những khó khăn về việc thiếu thốn hạ tầng cho việc làm phim 16mm, dẫn đến kinh phí tăng lên, chúng tôi đã đến với nhau để góp chung sức lực với mục đích duy nhất là biến phim này thành hiện thực: John Badalu, đồng sản xuất, có nhiều kinh nghiệm trong việc tuyển chọn phim cho các liên hoan phim hạng A và sản xuất phim, đặc biệt những phim về LGBTQ; Sơn Đoàn, một người bạn thân thiết và một đạo diễn hình ảnh tài năng; Gerald Thomas và Jean Francois những diễn viên dễ thương; và tất nhiên còn là sự hỗ trợ to lớn từ một trong những trung tâm nghệ thuật lớn của Pháp, Le Fresnoy.

Như một số bạn đã biết về những phim trước của Trương Minh Quý, anh luôn thử nghiệm những thử thách nghệ thuật khác nhau trong mỗi phim mà anh làm. Nếu phim dài đầu tay của anh là sự kết hợp giữa câu chuyện tiểu sử cá nhân và các yếu tố khoa học viễn tưởng, thì phim mới nhất của anh là một phim tài liệu luận đề, quay hoàn toàn bằng super 16mm, về câu hỏi của việc vô gia cư ở Việt Nam; và với phim này, Những Người Chờ Đợi, anh muốn sử dụng hoàn toàn kỹ thuật analog để biểu đạt điều gì đó vừa đẹp vừa buồn về tình yêu của những người lớn tuổi, điều đã trở nên hiếm hoi trên màn ảnh ngày nay. 

Từ 2019 đến 2021, Quý sẽ làm việc và trải nghiệm tại Le Fresnoy studio nơi sẽ sản xuất hai tác phẩm của anh trong vòng 2 năm. "Những Người Chờ Đợi" là tác phẩm đầu tiên được làm, với tham vọng làm một cuốn phim hoàn toàn trên analog 16mm.

Chúng tôi đã sẵn sàng để bấm máy, nhưng chúng tôi chỉ có thể hoàn thành phim với sự giúp đỡ hào phóng và quý giá của các bạn!

Tóm tắt phim

Trong một khu rừng gần xa lộ đâu đó ở Pháp, những người đàn ông chờ đợi giữa đám cây cối, trong sự tĩnh lặng của âm thanh và ánh sáng tự nhiên. Mỗi người chờ đợi một người nào đó. Những ánh nhìn xuyên qua cây lá, tìm kiếm những cơ thể chuyển động. Những cơ thể giống đực theo nhau băng qua những thân cây tìm kiếm nơi nào đó để dừng lại. Họ cởi bỏ quần áo. Trong hành động của ham muốn bị kiềm nén, cơ thể họ tìm lối gặp nhau. Trong sự tương tác với nhau, những người đàn ông này đột nhiên trở nên thật yếu ớt, da họ thật mềm, tay họ thật ấm, khuôn mặt thật con nít. Dường như họ sẽ bật khóc bất kỳ lúc nào. Ngay khi họ mặc quần áo lại, họ bỏ đi mà không hề biết tên nhau, mà không hề nhớ mặt nhau. Họ sẽ không bao giờ gặp lại nhau. 

Về Dự Án

Đây là một phim về đồng tính, nhưng không theo nghĩa đại chúng. Chúng tôi không muốn bước theo lối mòn của đa số những phim về gay hay làm: những cơ thể nam giới rắn chắc, bãi biển ngập nắng, nhạc teachno, cái kết bị kịch… Những nhân vật của phim này là những người bình thường có thể bắt gặp ở trong cuộc sống thực này: trong những mỏ than, ở trạm tàu, trong trang trại cam, trên đường phố… Họ không còn trẻ và không có cơ thể ‘nóng bỏng’. Cơ thể họ mang dấu vết của tuổi già, của công việc nặng nhọc, của một cuộc đời không tự do, của một cuộc nổi loạn bị che giấu, của một nỗi cô độc thường trực. Họ dịu dàng với mỗi cái chạm vì họ đã khát khao thật lâu cho nhau. Phát lộ sự mong manh của mối quan hệ con người như vậy là điều phim này muốn làm.

Với phim này, chúng tôi làm việc với những diễn viên không chuyên bởi lẽ điều chúng tôi tìm kiếm là sự hiện diện với những trải nghiệm đời thật. Việc thể hiện tình dục là cần thiết cho cuốn phim. Sẽ có nhiều cảnh cận cơ thể trong lúc làm tình. Sự kết hợp những hình ảnh này với chất liệu phim 16mm gợi lên cảm giác của những phim gợi cảm những năm 70. Các nhân vật trong phim này không có thân hình 'nóng bỏng', nhưng chính điều này lại làm cho tình dục giữa họ thực tế và con người hơn. Tình dục chỉ là tên gọi khác của sự cô đơn.

Phim này sẽ được quay trên 16mm và dựng phim thủ công (vâng: cắt-dán-cắt) trên máy Moviola, vốn là máy dựng phim đầu tiên được sáng chế bởi Iwan Serrurier năm 1924.

Cuốn phim hoàn chỉnh sẽ được chiếu trực tiếp từ bản in 16mm với âm thanh được in lên dải phim (và tất nhiên sẽ có một bản kỹ thuật số vì lý do tiện dụng). Ngày nay hầu như không còn ai làm phim, đặc biệt là phim ngắn, theo cách này nữa. Vẻ đẹp của phương tiện điện ảnh này đã gần như biến mất, quả thực nó đã trở thành quá khư. Việc làm phim này là một quá trình thủ công phức hợp vì cơ sở hạ tầng đã hầu như không còn. Nhưng cho một khoảnh khắc ngắn ngủi của cái đẹp, rất đáng để thử! Và chúng tôi rất cần sự giúp đỡ của các bạn! 

Bối Cảnh

Phim sẽ được quay ở miền Bắc nước Pháp tại một bối cảnh duy nhất: đồi than. Mặt đất được tạo nên bởi chất thải trong quá trình khai thác than có màu đen đậm giúp tạo nên hiệu ứng thị giác mạnh mẽ cho cuốn phim. Bối cảnh này liên kết với lịch sử khai thác than trong quá khứ, điều kết nối với câu chuyện phim một cách ẩn dụ.

Thời gian biểu

Chúng tôi dự tính quay vào cuối tháng 3/2020 khi mùa xuân chớm nở. 

Việc dựng và hậu kỳ sẽ kéo dài khoảng 2 tháng.

Phim sẽ được hoàn thành vào khoảng tháng 8/2020.

Trương Minh Quý, Đạo diễn

Trương Minh Quý sinh ở Buôn Ma Thuột. Năm 2010 anh bỏ học trường Sân Khấu Điện Ảnh TP.HCM ở năm hai để đi theo con đường làm phim độc lập. Quý sống và làm việc giữa đó và đây trong sự rung động của kí ức và khoảnh khắc hiện tại, những câu chuyện kể và hình ảnh của phim anh, nằm giữa tài liệu và hư cấu, cá nhân và phi cá nhân, được rút ra từ phong cảnh quê nhà, kí ức thơ ấu và văn cảnh lịch sử của Việt Nam. 

Phim của anh đã được chiếu trong các liên hoan phim và triễn lãm quốc tế như Rotterdam, Clermont-Ferrand, Oberhausen, Busan, Les Rencontres Internationales Paris&Berlin. Anh tham dự AFA 2012 (Học Viện Phim Châu Á, LHP Busan) và Berlinale Talents 2016 (LHP Berlin). Anh đoạt giải thưởng nghệ thuật chính của VideoBrasil, Sao Paulo 2017. Phim mới nhất của anh, Nhà Cây, dự thi ở LHP Locarno lần thứ 72, và chiếu ở LHP New York và Viennale cùng nhiều LHP khác.

Le Fresnoy- Studio Nghệ Thuật Đương Đại Quốc Gia Pháp (Sản Xuất Chính) 

Le Fresnoy- Studio Nghệ Thuật Đương Đại Quốc Gia Pháp là trung tâm độc đáo để sáng tác, thử nghiệm và trưng bày tác phẩm. Mỗi năm Le Fresnoy sản xuất khoảng 24 tác phẩm ở đủ các loại hình như điện ảnh, nhiếp ảnh, sắp đặt, phương tiện mới...cho các nghệ sĩ trẻ đến từ nhiều nơi trên thế giới. Triển lãm chung cuộc của Le Fresnoy phản chiếu sâu sắc tinh thần học hỏi, dám làm và thử nghiệm.

John Badalu, Đồng Sản Xuất

John Badalu đã làm việc trong ngành công nghiệp phim ảnh hơn 20 năm. Anh là một trong những đồng sáng lập của LHP Q! ở Indonesia, một LHP về LGBT lớn nhất ở quốc gia đa số theo đạo Hồi. Badalu là được nhận Học Bổng Quỹ Ashoka với vai trò là một người tạo nên sự thay đổi cho những hoạt động không mệt mỏi cho quyền của cộng đồng LGBT thông qua LHP trên. Badalu tuyển phim cho những LHP hạng A như Berlin, Shanghai và Tallinn từ 2011 đến 2019. Hiện tại anh đang làm cho LHP QCinema (Philippines) với vai trò là Giám tuyển chính. Anh đồng thời là nhà sản xuất độc lập cho 2 phim ngắn, 5 phim dài đã được ra mắt ở những LHP lớn như Sundance, Locarno, Rotterdam, Busan,…

Sơn Đoàn, Đạo Diễn Hình Ảnh

Sơn Đoàn là đạo diễn hình ảnh cho nhiều dự án đa dạng từ ngắn đền dài, phim nhựa đến kỹ thuật số. Anh đã hợp tác với Trương Minh Quý ở phim trước, Nhà Cây (LHP Locarno và New York). Những phim khác của anh gồm Sofia, đạo diễn Meryem BenM’Barek (Giải thưởng Kịch Bản hạng mục Un Certain Regard, LHP Cannes 2018); Doubbleplus Ungood, đạo diễn Marco Laguna, 2018;...
