Short Summary
This is the World
Premiere play about the famous meeting between veteran eccentric
English poet, Dr. Edith Sitwell and rising American film star, Marilyn Monroe
in Hollywood at the bequest of Life magazine in 1953. Two more opposite women
it would be impossible to find and yet they shared a difficult upbringing and
hid behind the public façade of their larger than life personalities. This play
examines both the real vulnerable women underneath and their iconic personas
they are best remembered for. Hollywood director, George Cukor, who knew both
women, is desperately trying to hold proceedings together as he struggles to
capture on film the historic meeting between the two women on a studio sound stage.
