“The Recipient” is a short thriller that follows a recovering heart transplantee. What makes it a thriller? She has no idea whose heart it is - and no one will tell her. The film focuses on the mental stress of having a stranger’s organ inside of you. The film was inspired by the short story “The Recipient” by Colleen Quinn, which will be released alongside the film.
By donating to “The Recipient,” you will not only be funding the creation of this short film, you will also be funding the distribution of the film to festivals and contests across the globe.
Graduating from UNCG in 2013, Robert charged ahead at full speed, opening his own business with nine other zealous filmmakers. While working at B&G Studios LLC, he was awarded “Best Editing” (CMF 2013), “Top 5 National VFX” (CMF 2013), and “Official Selection” (ECSFF 2013, Love Unlimited 2013) for his work on “Love Digital.” Working on over 250 visual effects shots has trained Robert to turn every video frame into a masterpiece. Which is what he hopes to achieve with “The Recipient.”
Winner of a 2014 Gold Telly Award for TV Entertainment, Landon has always aimed for the stars. From his humble beginnings at the University of NC at Greensboro, he quickly amassed a collection of awards, including Best Picture and National Best Picture Nominee for "Where the Last One Hides" (CMF 2014). Landon hones his craft daily, working for major productions, including "Shifting Gears," "Sightings (film)," and "Bar Rescue: Back to the Bar." Landon plans to re-invent how we think of cinematography with his work on "The Recipient."
Working on productions like “Undercover Boss” and “Banshee”, Westley has worked in film all his adult life. Focused on keeping the mic off camera and his career on track, he’s kept himself busy. Starting as an Audio Engineer and Colourist at B&G Studios, his work made its way into every video produced; including CMF Best Drama winner “Where the Last One Hides”. Recently, Westley has provided sound mixing services for “Shifting Gears” and “Sightings”.
We have not yet held our casting, but here are the characters we are looking for:
Hailey is a nervous city girl that has just undergone a heart transplant. Her curiousity to discover her donor’s identity is only second to her desire to breath fresh air again. Hailey will be portrayed as a twenty seven year old Caucasian.
Charlotte is a charismatic nurse currently tending to twenty patients in her Georgia Hospital. With over twenty years of nursing under her belt, she has seen it all and truly cares about each patient. Charlotte will be portrayed as a forty five year old Caucasian.
Stacey is an ambitious female reporter. Very ambitious.
Interested in auditioning for a role? Check our "Updates" section for more information regarding the roles.Primarily, short films are used to showcase a filmmaker’s abilities. With most film projects being client oriented, it is good to step back and create a narrative piece that allows you to showcase your talent.
Secondly, we make films for FUN. That’s right, we LOVE getting up at 6 am for the first take. True filmmakers will do anything to get that perfect shot, even if it means spending the night in a canyon or on a mountain top.
Our budget is $2,000. That includes $800 for Equipment and Locations, $700 for Actors and Crew, and $500 for Marketing, Perks, and Festivals.
What type of equipment are you using?
We are using a Black Magic Production Camera (an UltraHD camera), a Rokinon lens, and an anamorphic lens adapter to ensure we get the largest cinematic picture possible.
What is "UltraHD"?
UltraHD is video shot at a resolution of 2.5k or higher (HD is 1.9k). That means that the image will look sharper and more lifelike. Our camera will be shooting at 4k (double the resolution of HD), meaning we could show our film in an IMAX theater (or the Sundance Festival). Check out our example of the difference in size below:
What does an "anamorphic" lens do?
It squeezes light horizontally to allow you to fit more of what's in front of you into the camera. Most films shot on film use this adapter to create a cinematic look and fit wider video onto square film. Check out our example of how it works below:
How will you choose the performers?
We will be holding a two day casting call to evaluate local talent. Our main goal is to find a performers that play the character so well that we forget they are acting.
Here are the details for how to try out for our film:
Where will you be showing your film?
What good is a film if you don’t share it? That’s why we are taking it on the Festival Circuit. We are planning to submit to all of the big festivals, including the Sundance, Tribeca, and Toronto film festivals. We won’t stop there, either. We are planning to hit over fifty separate film festivals in an attempt to get as many laurels, and as much publicity, as possible. If you would like us to submit to your local festival, just send us a message, and “The Recipient” will be there.
What’s the deal with the BluRay/DVD stuff?
We plan to release a physical copy of our film to you if you invested in the $20 perk. The DVD and BluRay will also include digital copies of our storyboard artwork, the original short story, behind the scenes exclusive content, and the shooting script.
