Who We Are
We began as 6 women in a New York City acting class who became friends and then found ourselves in a post-2016 election world with a lot of emotions. We marched, we donated money, but we felt we needed to do more. We decided that we could and should use our art to bring awareness to our community. By turning our pain into drive, we vowed to create a platform for those voices that are often muted -- we became a collective.
Basically, we make badass theatre to feed our souls and to raise funds for charitable organizations that speak to us and our mission statement.
In our first year and a half, we've self-produced, self-funded, and self-directed 3 staged readings (Lysistrata, Trifles, The Feigned Courtesans), 1 production comprised of completely original monologues, songs, and poetry (FIRSTS) , and 1 fully staged published play (Dry Land). We've had the opportunity to connect and support the following charitable organizations: Reproductive Health Access Project, Safe Horizon, Girls Write Now, and Clubfoot CARES.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
The Shrill Collective is a group of female identifying artists striving to affect positive change in their community through the performing arts. We seek to create space for women’s voices and issues to be heard while raising funds for charitable organizations through intimate readings and stagings of contemporary, classical, and original works.
What We Need
Making art is not cheap. We want to put on quality & exciting productions for our audiences while raising money for charitable organizations. We need to raise at least $6,000 to pay for our current and future seasons of plays.
- These costs cover:
- Rights to plays
- Compensating actors
- Compensating directors, stage managers, light/sound technicians
- Sets, props, costumes
- Future merchandise (you KNOW you want a #ShrillAF tote)
- Rehearsal space
- Advertising
- Refreshments at shows (WINE)
- and the MANY miscellaneous things that add up when producing theatre
What You Get & How Your Donation Helps
Oh, so many awesome perks. Social media shout-outs, handwritten thank you notes, #ShrillAF tote bags, #ShrillAF stickers, #ShrillAF pins, wine at our shows, invite to one of our after parties.
Some pretty cool stuff, but most importantly, you get to help us help others. Every donation allows us to make more theatre, allows us to give opportunity to up-and-coming playwrights, actors, and directors, and to support our charities of choice. Won't it feel great to donate?!
Risks & Challenges
We know, we know. $6,000 is a lot of money, but we've been making art on a budget for nearly 2 years. The money raised from this campaign will go a long way. We're setting our campaign to a flexible goal because every dollar TRULY helps. If we don't make our goal of $6,000, we'll still be able to use the amount raised to continue to make art for a cause with less coming out of our pockets.
