The Six Comforts book, an cyclical work of text and image by artist Christopher Gustave, must not be lost to obscurity.
Christopher Gustave’s immense conceptual art book “The Six
Comforts”, 344 pages in total, more than 308 full color plates, will be printed as a

Gustave conceived of the Six Comforts as a method for living in
response to personal tragedy, primarily the death by heroin overdose of his
best friend, Daniel Brack, in San Francisco, on September 13th, 1996. Over the
next several years, he focused his creative output in book-design, conceptual
art, collage and assemblage within a framework of this “sorting construct” of
the Six Comforts: key components of a method of living in opposition to
super-cultural alienation, and unrecoverable loss.
"The Six Comforts are Home, Sleep, Work, Love, Food and
Self. The Six
Comforts’ is a sorting construct I formulated around the summer of 1997. At
that point in my life I had just endured a blistering spate of profoundly bad
luck—death, divorce, unemployment, homelessness… you name it—and I was in a
deep state of emotional turmoil and mental resignation… really heart-broken and
bereft of hope. Life nearly unendurable and all that. However, given a little time, it was pretty clear that, in
spite of all of this, I was not going to just stop living. I had resigned
myself to the Nietzschean formula (“That which does not kill us…”). Part of my
survival regimen at that time was to simply sort out what I most needed in
order to keep on going and just focus on those basics; get myself back into a
healthy, sane and productive place. So, those “basics” became ‘The Six
Comforts’." — Christopher Gustave, 2002.
The work “The Six Comforts” existed primarily in book-page
spreads, diptychs, comprised of poetical texts and, aphorisms layered with
photographic elements. It can be read forward to back, back to front, and
starting anywhere in the middle. Pages from the unbound book were exhibited and
sold in St. Louis galleries between 1999 and 2002. Other works from this series
include a Six Comforts “screen” assembly the size of a room, The Six Comforts as
a series of hand-pulled woodcuts, The Six Comforts Panels (assemblage of found
objects with encaustic) and finally culminating in a concept-album in
collaboration with several talented St. Louis musicians.
On January 17th, 2014, Christopher Gustave was found dead in his
apartment of a overdose of anti-depressants. Within days of his passing,
hundreds of his friends and supporters organized and began gathering together
his works of art. A fundraising memorial was held at MAD Art Gallery in St.
Louis, with the purpose to raise money for his eight-year-old daughter, Sophia.
We are continuing that purpose in perpetuity with the initial release of this book
The Six Comforts, which will mark the completion of Gustave’s final, and
perhaps most challenging and important, work of art.
This book embodies a spiritual quest against the backdrop of modern industrial oppression.
The experience one has of reading the book is extraordinary. Gustave tears down megalithic conceptions foisted upon us by a vapid culture and replaces them with sharp, emancipating anti-slogans. While the punk-rock ideals inherent to Gustave’s practice keep everything on the edge, there is redemption on every page.
Please share this campaign with everyone you know and love.
